Practical overview
When it fits
Use the repository when you need a concrete Rust example to study or adapt for an ExEx that works with a Reth node, particularly for event handling, RPC backfills, notification transport or L1-related patterns.
Who it is for
- Rust developers exploring how to build execution extensions for Reth.
- Developers seeking example patterns for chain monitoring, backfills, notifications, bridge receipts, oracle behavior or rollup state.
Documented uses
- Observe and log chain commits, reorgs and reverts.
- Expose an RPC operation to backfill a range of blocks.
- Send execution-extension notifications through gRPC and receive them with a client.
- Track plain state in memory or derive rollup state from L1.
- Decode Optimism deposit and withdrawal receipts from L1.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and dual-licensed under Apache-2.0 or MIT. The documented examples are launched with Cargo commands.
- Examples are built on Reth and written in Rust.
- The backfill example requires a Reth HTTP RPC endpoint on port 8545 for the documented command sequence.
- The collection spans multiple patterns; choose an individual example based on the task rather than treating it as a single hosted application.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Run the documented block-range backfill example
Start the example Reth node with HTTP RPC and request execution of the most recent ten blocks.
Before you start
- Rust and Cargo, for the documented cargo run commands.
- A local Reth node with HTTP RPC enabled on port 8545.
- The README's cast commands and ETH_RPC_URL environment variable.
Steps
From the repository, run the command below to start Reth with an HTTP RPC endpoint on port 8545.
cargo run --bin backfill -- node --httpSet
ETH_RPC_URL=http://localhost:8545, obtain the current block number withcast bn, and set it asTIP.Call
cast rpc backfill_start $(($TIP - 10)) $TIPto request backfill of the last ten blocks.
Expected outcome
The example's RPC is asked to backfill (execute) the selected block range.
Guide limitations
- The documented sequence depends on a local Reth HTTP RPC endpoint at port 8545.
- The guide describes the repository's documented commands, not a separately verified execution.
