Practical overview

When it fits

Use Trapper when a Transformers-based NLP project benefits from configuration-driven experiments and reusable task components, and the team is prepared to define task and input representations.

Who it is for

  • NLP researchers and practitioners building transformer-based workflows.
  • Transformers users who want reusable components and experiment settings separated from workflow code.
  • Developers who want registry-based dependency injection and a common configuration approach for experiments.

Documented uses

  • Define NLP training or evaluation experiments through JSON or Jsonnet configuration files.
  • Change model and optimizer choices in configuration rather than rewriting workflow code.
  • Use Hugging Face Hub datasets or load local and private data converted to the Hugging Face Datasets format.
  • Structure a downstream task using common NLP formulations such as sequence classification, token classification, or question answering.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

The public GitHub repository lists an MIT license and documents installation with pip.

  • Trapper reuses Hugging Face Transformers models and trainer, while adding task abstractions and configuration-based experiment setup.
  • Its dependency-injection mechanism uses AllenNLP's registry, but Trapper generally does not use AllenNLP's abstractions or base classes; their components cannot simply be mixed.
  • Users must choose an NLP task formulation and input representation, including relevant special tokens and, for some tasks, segment identifiers.
  • Datasets Hub entries can be specified in training configuration; local or private datasets need to be converted to Hugging Face Datasets format.
  • For tasks not readily supported by Transformers, the documented route is to extend Trapper's base classes.

Source-based practical guide

Install Trapper in a Python environment

Create an isolated Python environment and install the Trapper package.

Before you start

  • Python; the installation example specifies Python 3.7.10 with Conda.
  • Conda or another virtual-environment tool such as virtualenv.
  • pip.

Steps

  1. Create a Conda environment named trapper with Python 3.7.10, or prepare an equivalent virtual environment.

  2. Activate the environment.

  3. Install the package with pip install trapper.

Expected outcome

The documented setup leaves Trapper and its dependencies installed in the chosen Python environment.

Guide limitations

  • These steps cover installation only, not running a training or evaluation experiment.
