Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when translating supported book or document files and you want a desktop workflow with a choice of local or hosted models, progress resumption, or format-aware output.
Who it is for
- Readers or translators working with books and long documents in supported file formats.
- Users who want to choose between local Ollama models and hosted or OpenAI-compatible providers.
- People translating work that may be interrupted or needs consistent writing style across sections.
Documented uses
- Translate books, subtitles and documents into another language.
- Continue a long translation after an interruption using saved checkpoints.
- Apply a reusable style preset or derive a glossary and style from the source document.
- Choose a local model or connect a supported hosted or compatible model service.
Requirements & limits
Released builds are listed for Windows and macOS. Cloud providers require an API key; the project describes Ollama as a local option. The repository lists an AGPL-3.0 license.
- Local Ollama use and cloud-provider use have different data and credential requirements; the project says local Ollama processing keeps content on the user's machine.
- PDF output is reflowed rather than retaining the original page layout; scanned PDFs are unsupported, multi-column layouts are best effort, and PDF refinement is unavailable.
- Automatic glossary and style generation each require an additional LLM call.
- A source installation requires Python 3.8+, Ollama and Git, according to the project instructions.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up the desktop app on Windows or macOS
Install a released build and open its local browser interface.
Before you start

- A downloaded release archive for the platform
Steps
Download the release archive for Windows or macOS.
Extract the archive.
Run TranslateBook.exe on Windows or ./TranslateBook on macOS.
Open http://localhost:5000 in a browser and choose a translation provider on first launch.
Expected outcome
The local browser interface opens for provider selection and translation work.
Guide limitations
- Cloud provider use requires an API key.
- On macOS, the instructions call for approving the app in System Settings > Privacy & Security on first launch.
