Practical overview
When it fits
Use Bedrust when you want a local terminal interface to models available through Amazon Bedrock, or need its documented image-captioning and beta repository-analysis workflows.
Who it is for
- Developers who want to prompt Amazon Bedrock models from a local terminal.
- Users who want to generate image captions with Claude 3 Sonnet or Claude 3 Haiku.
- Developers exploring model-assisted questions and suggestions about a source repository.
Documented uses
- Choose a supported model and submit prompts through an interactive CLI.
- Create captions for a directory of images and save them with image paths in JSON.
- Ask questions about a source repository and request code suggestions or improvements.
- Provide repository-specific instructions through a `.bedrustrules` file.
Requirements & limits
Bedrust is an open-source Rust project with an MIT license. The README documents local Cargo installation and requires AWS credentials with Amazon Bedrock InvokeModel permission for model use.
- The application invokes models through Amazon Bedrock; it does not host the models.
- A local Rust toolchain and platform development tools are needed to compile it.
- The AWS identity used by Bedrust needs permission to invoke models on Bedrock.
- Image captioning is documented for Claude 3 Sonnet and Claude 3 Haiku.
- Source-code analysis is identified as a beta feature.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install and initialize Bedrust
Install the CLI locally and create its initial configuration.
Before you start
- Rust installed
- Development tools for compiling Rust applications
- Locally configured AWS credentials with permission to invoke models on Amazon Bedrock
Steps
Install Bedrust with the command below.
cargo install bedrustRun
bedrust --initand choose a default model when prompted.
Expected outcome
The compiled binary is installed in `$CARGO_HOME/bin`, and initialization creates the configuration files under `$HOME/.config/bedrust`.
Guide limitations
- The binary must be on your PATH to run it by name.
- The README says Bedrust fails to run if its required configuration files are absent.
Caption a directory of images
Generate a JSON file of image captions using a supported Claude model.
Before you start
- Bedrust installed and initialized
- AWS credentials with permission to invoke Amazon Bedrock models
- A directory of images supported by the configured captioning options
- Claude 3 Sonnet or Claude 3 Haiku selected
Steps
Choose Claude 3 Sonnet or Claude 3 Haiku.
Run
bedrust -m claude-v3-sonnet -c /path/to/images/, replacing the model or directory as needed.
Expected outcome
Bedrust writes `captions.json` in the current working directory, associating captions with image paths.
Guide limitations
- The README identifies Claude 3 Sonnet and Claude 3 Haiku as the only models supporting captioning.
- Supported image formats can be customized in
bedrust_config.ron.
