Jswallet

Jswallet is an experimental Electron desktop Bitcoin wallet that demonstrates HD key derivation and reads balances and transaction history, then broadcasts transactions through mempool.space APIs. It defaults to Bitcoin testnet4 and stores wallet data locally.

Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Jswallet for educational exploration of wallet derivation and testnet4 transaction flows, rather than as a production wallet.

Who it is for

  • Learners exploring Bitcoin HD wallet key derivation.
  • Developers interested in examining an Electron and React Bitcoin wallet.
  • Users exploring testnet4 balances, history and transaction broadcasting.

Documented uses

  • Explore how Bitcoin wallet keys are derived.
  • Read wallet balances and transaction history on the selected network.
  • Broadcast Bitcoin transactions through mempool.space APIs.

Requirements & limits

The repository documents installers for Windows, macOS and Linux, as well as running from source with Node.js 24. Installers are not code-signed yet and may trigger operating-system warnings.

  • The default network is testnet4; mainnet can be selected in src/env.json.
  • The network API base must be an HTTPS mempool.space URL for network features to remain enabled.
  • Wallet data is stored locally in the app's data folder, and each wallet belongs to the network on which it was created.
  • The project expressly warns that it is educational, not production code; mainnet uses real money.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Run Jswallet from source

Start the desktop app from its source repository for educational exploration.

Before you start

  • Node.js 24, the version specified in the repository's .nvmrc file.
  • A terminal and Git.

Steps

  1. Clone the repository with the command below.

    Documented command
    git clone https://github.com/mmick66/jswallet.git
  2. Change into the project directory with cd jswallet.

  3. Install dependencies with the command below.

    Documented command
    npm install
  4. Start the app with the command below.

    Documented command
    npm start

Expected outcome

The app runs from source, with its renderer served by Vite's development server.

Guide limitations

  • The project is explicitly described as educational, not production code.
  • The default network is testnet4; network configuration is built into the app, so changes require restarting npm start or rebuilding.
Source-based practical guide

Select Bitcoin mainnet in the configuration

Configure the app to select Bitcoin mainnet instead of its default testnet4 network.

Before you start

  • Access to the project source and its src/env.json configuration.

Steps

  1. Open src/env.json.

  2. Set network to bitcoin and ensure the corresponding apiBase is an HTTPS mempool.space URL.

  3. Restart the command below or rebuild the app for the configuration change to take effect.

    Documented command
    npm start

Expected outcome

The app selects Bitcoin mainnet rather than testnet4.

Guide limitations

  • The project warns that it is not production code.
  • Mainnet uses real money, and wallets are associated with the network on which they were created.
