Practical overview
When it fits
Use Indy when you have a Bitcoin mnemonic or extended key and need to search known wallet derivation paths for associated UTXOs. For a transfer, it can prepare a sweep transaction to an address you choose.
Who it is for
- People trying to locate Bitcoin funds from a mnemonic or extended key when the original derivation path or address format is uncertain.
- Users seeking to move located single-key wallet funds to a chosen destination address.
Documented uses
- Scan known derivation-path and script-type combinations for funds associated with a mnemonic or extended key.
- Find UTXOs associated with an xpub.
- Adjust address and account gap limits or connect to a specified Electrum server.
- Construct a transaction to sweep located funds to a destination address and optionally broadcast it.
Requirements & limits
- The README limits recovery to single-key wallets; it says a mnemonic alone cannot recover multisig or Lightning funds.
- An xpub can be used to find UTXOs, but the README describes sweeping funds from mnemonics and xprivs.
- Broadcasting is separate from transaction creation and requires the --broadcast option.
- Indy connects to Electrum servers and allows a custom host, port and TCP or SSL protocol.
- The project is written in Python, uses a CLI, and is licensed under MIT.
