When it fits
Use the repository when you want to examine or adapt an Android demonstration that brings Gemini generative AI together with Stream messaging.
Who it is for
- Android developers exploring Gemini API integration
- Developers studying a Compose-based AI chat example
Documented uses
- Explore an example of Gemini API use in an Android app.
- Study a chat interface built with Jetpack Compose and Stream Chat Compose SDK.
- Review the sample's use of Hilt, AppStartup, and Kotlin Coroutines.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and identifies an Apache-2.0 license. Its README displays an Android API 21+ badge.
- The documented stack includes Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, Hilt, AppStartup, Kotlin Coroutines, and Stream Chat Compose SDK.
- The README provides Stream app and key setup steps, but the available instructions stop before documenting how to run the app.
- The API 21+ detail comes from a repository badge and is not a compatibility guarantee.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Configure Stream credentials for the sample
Create a Stream app and add its API key to the Android project, following the repository's documented setup steps.
Before you start
- Access to the Gemini Android repository
- A GitHub account or the information requested by Stream's sign-up form
- A Stream dashboard account
Steps
Sign up through the Stream login page and open the Stream dashboard.
Create a Stream app and copy its key.
Create a root-level file named secrets.properties in the Android project and add the key as STREAM_API_KEY=..
In the Stream app's Overview settings, enable Disable Auth Checks and submit the change.
In Explorer, open users, choose Create New User, and add a user.
Expected outcome
The repository's documented Stream app, key-file, authentication-setting, and user-creation setup stages are completed.
Guide limitations
- The available setup instructions do not document later steps for configuring Gemini credentials, building, or running the app.
- The README describes disabling authentication checks as part of its example setup; this is a configuration step, not a security recommendation.
