Practical overview
When it fits
Use Ion when you need a framework for developing cross-system contract interactions and want to study its repository examples. The documented setup and Rinkeby walkthrough are aimed at developers working with the project locally.
Who it is for
- Developers building or exploring cross-chain smart contracts.
- Teams investigating contract interactions that verify a transaction on one chain and use its data in another.
Documented uses
- Develop smart contracts that interact across blockchains or systems.
- Explore an example that verifies a Rinkeby transaction and uses its data in a later contract call.
- Investigate atomic-swap or decentralised-exchange use cases built on an interoperability framework.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and identifies its license as LGPL-3.0.
- The README lists Node.js v10.15.0 and Go 1.8 as minimum versions for setup without Docker; it also provides a Docker-based setup path.
- The example identifies Solidity v0.5.12 and includes an Ion CLI workflow for connecting to a client, adding an account, and deploying a contract.
- The Rinkeby walkthrough requires a signing account and constructor parameters for the example contract.
- Atomic swaps and decentralised exchanges are described as applications developers can build, not as ready-made services.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up Ion locally and run its test suite
Install the Ion dependencies and run the repository’s local test RPC and test suite.
Before you start
- A cloned Ion repository.
- For the non-Docker path, Node.js v10.15.0 and Go 1.8.
Steps
For the Docker path, build and start the container with the command below and the command below, then open a shell in a separate terminal with the command below.
docker build -t ion/dev .docker run -ti --name ion ion/devdocker exec -ti ion /bin/bashFor the non-Docker path, from the repository directory run the command below.
npm installRun the command below.
npm run testrpcRun the command below.
npm run test
Expected outcome
The README describes the test command as testing the full stack of contracts, including the example flow, and gives an example result of 74 passing tests.
Guide limitations
- The Docker and non-Docker paths are alternatives; the documented Node.js and Go minimum versions apply to the non-Docker path.
- The reported passing test count is an example in the README, not a guarantee of a current successful run.
