Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it when an application needs to retrieve Ethereum NFT metadata and render it in a React interface, or when the documented FetchWrapper interface suits a non-React context.

Who it is for

  • React developers adding NFT metadata to application interfaces
  • Developers building token-detail views or NFT galleries
  • Developers who need a documented non-hook fetch interface for other frontend libraries or Node.js

Documented uses

  • Retrieve metadata for a specified NFT contract and token ID.
  • Display token name, description, image, owner and metadata URL in an application.
  • Handle loading and error states while NFT data is fetched.

Requirements & limits

The project repository identifies the library as MIT-licensed.

  • The hook requires an NFT contract address and token ID.
  • Choose between an Ethers provider and a standard Ethereum provider; a custom fetcher is also supported.
  • FetchWrapper is documented for non-React use but does not retry or cache.
  • The provider configuration allows an IPFS gateway and image or JSON proxy functions to be customized.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Set up NFT metadata retrieval in a React app

Install Use NFT, configure a documented Ethereum fetcher and call the hook with an NFT contract address and token ID.

Before you start

  • A React application
  • An Ethereum provider, such as an Ethers provider or a standard Ethereum provider
  • For the Ethers fetcher, Ethers or @ethersproject/contracts in the app

Steps

  1. Install the library with npm install --save use-nft.

  2. Choose the Ethers fetcher and pass it a provider, or choose the Ethereum fetcher and pass a standard Ethereum provider.

  3. Wrap the app with NftProvider configured with the chosen fetcher.

  4. Call useNft with the NFT contract address and token ID, then use its loading, error and nft values in the interface.

Expected outcome

The React component can access the token's returned metadata, including name, description, image, owner and metadata URL.

Guide limitations

  • The guide covers metadata retrieval, not a complete gallery or marketplace.
  • The hook requires a contract address and token ID; data is undefined until retrieval is done.

Fetch NFT metadata outside React with FetchWrapper

Use the documented FetchWrapper interface to make an NFT metadata request from another frontend library or Node.js.

Before you start

  • The Use NFT package
  • A fetcher declaration, such as the documented Ethers fetcher and provider
  • An NFT contract address and token ID

Steps

  1. Install the package with npm install --save use-nft.

  2. Create a fetcher declaration using a supported provider.

  3. Pass the fetcher declaration to FetchWrapper.

  4. Call fetchNft with the NFT contract address and token ID.

Expected outcome

FetchWrapper attempts to retrieve NFT data for the supplied token.

Guide limitations

  • Unlike useNft, FetchWrapper does not retry or cache; it makes one fetch attempt.
