Practical overview
When it fits
Use Heimdall when a Solana validator's Geyser updates need to feed Redis-based consumers, a gRPC stream, or a PostgreSQL-backed processing workflow.
Who it is for
- Teams operating Solana validators that need to route validator updates into downstream systems.
- Developers building filtered event pipelines, analytics processors or client applications around Solana data.
Documented uses
- Publish validator account, slot-status and transaction events to named Redis streams.
- Filter account and program updates and choose whether to include vote or failed transactions.
- Consume updates through the documented stream service and process data with the PostgreSQL-backed processor.
- Expose optional Prometheus-format metrics for the streaming setup.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and identifies the project as open source under the Apache License 2.0. The documented build targets Linux and macOS.
- The plugin and validator must be built against identical Solana and Rust compiler versions.
- Redis publishing is asynchronous and non-blocking, but buffered events can be dropped if the publishing buffer is exhausted; the README recommends sizing buffers appropriately.
- The stack distinguishes the validator plugin from supporting API, stream and database processor services.
- Prometheus metrics are optional and configured by an address in the JSON configuration.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Build Heimdall from source
Compile the Geyser plugin library for use with a Solana validator.
Before you start
- Rust at the latest stable version
- A build environment using the same Solana and Rust compiler versions as the target validator
Steps
From the repository, run the command below.
cargo build --releaseUse the resulting
./target/release/libgeyser.soon Linux or./target/release/libgeyser.dylibon macOS.
Expected outcome
A release-built Geyser plugin library for the corresponding platform.
Guide limitations
- The Solana validator and plugin build environments must match in Solana and Rust compiler versions; the README warns that mismatches can cause memory corruption and crashes.
- This guide covers building the plugin, not configuring or running a validator.
Prepare the Redis and PostgreSQL services
Start Heimdall's documented local data services and apply database migrations.
Before you start
- Docker and Docker Compose
- Diesel CLI with PostgreSQL support
- The repository's pnpm scripts
Steps
Run the command below to start the PostgreSQL and Redis containers.
docker compose up -dInstall Diesel CLI with the command below.
cargo install diesel_cli --no-default-features --features postgresSet
DATABASE_URLtopostgresql://heimdall:heimdall@localhost:5432/heimdall_db.Run
pnpm run migrate.
Expected outcome
The documented local containers are running and the database migrations have been applied.
Guide limitations
- This is infrastructure and database preparation; it does not start the API, stream server or database processor.
- The documented default Redis connection is
redis://localhost:6379.
