Practical overview

When it fits

Use it when your task involves operating or developing Spacemesh full-node infrastructure. The repository documents source-based development; it does not provide a complete node-operation recipe in the available instructions.

Who it is for

  • Spacemesh node operators using the full-node implementation.
  • Go developers building, modifying or contributing to Spacemesh node software.
  • Developers creating node-management or monitoring tools for Spacemesh deployments.

Documented uses

  • Run the Spacemesh protocol’s full-node software.
  • Build the node implementation from source for local development.
  • Contribute code or other work to the open-source repository.

Requirements & limits

The repository is public and identifies the software as MIT-licensed open source. The README describes distribution through the Spacemesh App and also supports building and running from source.

  • Local development requires Go 1.24 or later and Git LFS; Windows also requires make.
  • The README specifies Linux with GLIBC 2.34 or later, macOS 13 on Intel or macOS 14 on Apple silicon and newer, and Windows 10 or newer for building.
  • FreeBSD appears in a platform badge, but the README says it is not officially supported.
  • The README includes local development setup, but the available material does not document a complete install-and-run procedure for node operators.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Prepare a local go-spacemesh development environment

Set up the documented prerequisites and Go environment for building go-spacemesh from source.

Before you start

  • A supported build platform: Linux with GLIBC 2.34 or later, macOS 13 (Intel) or macOS 14 (Arm) or newer, or Windows 10 or newer.
  • Go 1.24 or later.
  • Git LFS.
  • A correctly configured GOPATH with its bin directory on PATH.
  • On Windows, make installed through MSYS2, MinGW-w64, or mingw.

Steps

  1. Clone the go-spacemesh repository, or fork it; place the code outside GOPATH when using Go Modules.

  2. Install Go 1.24 or later and Git LFS. On Windows, also install make using one of the documented options.

  3. Ensure GOPATH is set correctly and that $GOPATH/bin is on PATH.

  4. Run the command below to set up the Go environment, then run the command below to check it.

    Documented command
    make install
    Documented command
    make go-env-test

Expected outcome

The documented Go environment setup and environment check have been run for the local repository.

Guide limitations

  • FreeBSD is not officially supported for building.
  • The README also requires CGO_CFLAGS and CGO_LDFLAGS values, but the available text cuts off before the full values are provided.
  • These steps prepare the local development environment; they do not document completing a build or running a node.
