Stratum Ping

Stratum Ping is a Go command-line utility that measures how long a mining pool takes to connect and authenticate over the Stratum protocol. It reports repeated response times and summary statistics, and supports IPv4, IPv6, optional TLS, and Stratum 1 or Stratum 2 modes. The repository lists an MIT license.

Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it when generic network ping does not answer the practical question of how quickly mining software can connect and authenticate with a pool over Stratum.

Who it is for

  • Miners comparing the Stratum responsiveness of pool endpoints.
  • Pool operators measuring connection and authentication response times.
  • Developers assessing mining-pool connectivity using Stratum rather than generic network ping.

Documented uses

  • Measure response time for a pool's Stratum connection and authentication exchange.
  • Compare timing readings across pool endpoints or connection configurations.
  • Collect repeated readings with a configurable reply count.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

  • The target must be a pool hostname and port configured for the selected Stratum mode and connection settings.
  • The CLI defaults to Stratum 2 and five replies; flags select Stratum 1, IPv6, TLS, reply count, login and password.
  • The reported timing concerns connection and authentication through Stratum, not overall mining results.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Measure a pool endpoint over Stratum

Collect repeated response-time readings from a mining-pool host and port.

Before you start

  • The stratum-ping command-line utility
  • A mining-pool hostname and port that accept Stratum connections

Steps

  1. Run stratum-ping with the pool hostname and port as the target.

  2. Use -c followed by a count to set how many replies to collect; the documented default is five.

  3. Review the per-reply timings and the minimum, average and maximum summary.

Expected outcome

A set of Stratum response-time readings and summary statistics for the specified endpoint.

Guide limitations

  • The tool measures Stratum connection and authentication response time; it is not a generic network ping.
  • Results are specific to the endpoint and connection settings used.
Source-based practical guide

Compare address family and TLS configurations

Collect readings for documented IPv4, IPv6 and TLS connection variants.

Before you start

  • The stratum-ping command-line utility
  • A pool endpoint and the relevant Stratum port

Steps

  1. Run against the pool host and port without flags for an IPv4 connection without TLS.

  2. Run again with -6 to request IPv6, where the endpoint supports it.

  3. Run with -tls and the applicable TLS port to measure a TLS connection.

  4. Compare the timing summaries while noting the address family and TLS configuration for each run.

Expected outcome

Separate Stratum response-time readings for the tested connection variants.

Guide limitations

  • The README's examples use different ports for TLS and non-TLS connections, so comparisons should account for endpoint configuration.
  • The documented examples do not show IPv6 with TLS.
