Practical overview
When it fits
Use SparkMiner when you have a supported ESP32-family board and want to explore or demonstrate Bitcoin solo mining on embedded hardware. The project explicitly presents this use as educational and hobbyist rather than income-generating.
Who it is for
- ESP32 hobbyists who want to assemble a Bitcoin solo-mining demonstration.
- Developers exploring embedded SHA-256 mining on supported ESP32-family hardware.
- CYD and other listed ESP32 board owners looking for firmware matched to their hardware variant.
Documented uses
- Install mining firmware on a supported ESP32 board.
- Configure Wi-Fi, a mining pool and a Bitcoin address for the device.
- Build the firmware from source with the documented PlatformIO-based toolchain.
- Explore an educational embedded Bitcoin-mining project.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and lists the GPL-3.0 license. The documented source-build path uses Python and PlatformIO; the README also provides prebuilt firmware images.
- Match the downloaded image to the precise board and display variant; the repository lists distinct files for several CYD, S3, C3 and generic ESP32 configurations.
- The SD-card route requires a FAT32 microSD card and a config.json file; direct USB flashing instead uses a complete factory image.
- Configuration requires Wi-Fi credentials, a pool hostname and port, and a Bitcoin address.
- The project warns that ESP32 solo mining has extremely low odds of finding a block and is intended for education and experimentation, not profit.
- The README reports approximate pool-observed hashrates; results can depend on hardware and setup.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Configure a flashed device through its Wi-Fi portal
Submit Wi-Fi, pool and Bitcoin-address settings to a SparkMiner device through its access-point portal.
Before you start
- A SparkMiner device that has been flashed with a factory image
- A Wi-Fi-capable computer or device
- The Wi-Fi network name and password, mining-pool details and Bitcoin address
Steps
Power on the device; the documented first-start route creates a Wi-Fi access point.
Connect to the SparkMiner-XXXX network; the README lists minebitcoin as its password.
Open http://192.168.4.1 in a browser and configure the device through the portal.
Expected outcome
The device receives the connection and mining configuration through its web portal.
Guide limitations
- The README also documents a Python configuration utility, but this recipe covers the browser route only.
- The portal route is described for a device without an SD-card configuration.
