Openflipbook

Openflipbook is an open-source, self-hostable web application for creating and exploring illustrated worlds. It generates pages from a prompt, map or uploaded image; users can enter places through image regions, revisit saved views, edit place names and references, branch worlds, and share read-only journeys. The documented stack includes a Next.js web app, a FastAPI backend, and Modal hosting options, with AI servic

Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Openflipbook when an illustrated result should be explored as connected places rather than viewed as a single image, or when you want to host and configure the application yourself.

Who it is for

  • Creators building navigable illustrated worlds or branching visual stories.
  • Developers who want to run and configure a self-hosted visual-generation application.
  • People who want to publish an interactive, read-only journey through already-generated pages.

Documented uses

  • Start an illustrated world from a map, prompt or uploaded image.
  • Explore a scene by selecting a region to generate or enter a deeper place.
  • Save and revisit views, edit place names and references, and branch a world.
  • Share a read-only viewer that lets others navigate pages already generated.

Requirements & limits

The project is open source under the MIT license. The documented local demo requires Docker and user-supplied fal and OpenRouter keys; hosted deployment requires additional storage and hosting credentials.

  • The local demo keeps MongoDB and blob storage in Docker, but image generation and planning rely on external services and user-supplied keys.
  • A mock mode tests navigation plumbing with placeholder images, not the quality of generated illustrations.
  • Saved views retrieve their saved images; new generated viewpoints can still differ.
  • The read-only published viewer navigates existing pages without making model calls.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Start the local Docker demo

Set up Openflipbook locally with its web app, backend, MongoDB and blob storage, using cloud AI services.

Before you start

  • Docker
  • A clone of the Openflipbook repository
  • A fal key for image generation
  • An OpenRouter API key for planning and click interpretation

Steps

  1. Clone the repository and change into its directory.

  2. Copy .env.example to .env and fill in FAL_KEY and OPENROUTER_API_KEY.

  3. Run the command below.

    Documented command
    make demo
  4. Open http://localhost:3000/play.

Expected outcome

The documented local stack starts with the web app, backend, MongoDB and local blob storage wired together.

Guide limitations

  • The demo uses your own API credentials and any associated service charges.
  • Use make demo-mock to test navigation plumbing without API keys or model charges; its placeholder images do not represent visual quality.
