Practical overview

When it fits

Use Openjourney when you want to move between text-to-image, text-to-video and image-to-video workflows in one interface, or when you want a codebase to extend with other models.

Who it is for

  • People who want a single interface for prompt-based image and video generation.
  • Developers looking to adapt a Next.js interface to connect additional image or video models.

Documented uses

Requirements & limits

The repository describes Openjourney as open source under the MIT License. Running it locally requires a Google AI API key.

  • Image generation uses Imagen 4; text-to-video uses Veo 3; image-to-video uses Veo 2.
  • The README describes Veo 3 output as approximately three to five seconds at 720p, with audio.
  • The documented stack is Next.js 15, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS 4, Framer Motion, ShadCN UI, Radix UI and the Google GenAI SDK.
  • Local setup requires Node.js 18 or newer and npm or yarn.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Set up Openjourney locally

Prepare the Next.js application and configure its Google AI API key.

Before you start

  • Node.js 18 or newer; Node.js 20 or newer is recommended.
  • npm or yarn.
  • A Google AI API key.

Steps

  1. Clone the project repository and change into the openjourney-app directory.

  2. Install the dependencies with npm install.

  3. Create a .env.local file and set GOOGLE_AI_API_KEY to your key.

  4. Start the development server with npm run dev and open http://localhost:3000.

Expected outcome

The project is configured to run its development server locally.

Guide limitations

  • A Google AI API key is required for AI generation; the README says it can also be entered in the app.
  • These steps cover local setup, not deployment.
