Practical overview
When it fits
Use it at the start of a Celo dApp project when you want to choose a template and integrations through CLI prompts or command-line options, then continue developing the generated code.
Who it is for
- Developers starting a Celo dApp project who want a generated codebase rather than a hosted app builder.
- Teams comparing starter structures for a basic web app, Farcaster Miniapp, Minipay app, AI chat app or x402 paid API.
Documented uses
- Scaffold a Celo dApp project with a selected app template.
- Choose whether to include RainbowKit or Thirdweb wallet integration.
- Choose Hardhat or Foundry contract tooling, or skip contract setup.
- Generate a monorepo structure with a Next.js web app and optional contracts app.
Requirements & limits
The CLI can be run through npx without a global installation. It requires Node.js 18.0.0 or later and PNPM, npm or Yarn. The repository specifies the MIT license.
- The default setup selects the basic template, RainbowKit and Hardhat; prompts or flags can change these choices.
- The template list includes both standard app scaffolds and specialized options such as x402, which requires a facilitator API key.
- The generated stack includes Next.js, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS, shadcn/ui, Turborepo and PNPM workspaces.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Generate a Celo dApp starter project
Create a starter codebase with a chosen template, wallet provider and contract framework.
Before you start
- Node.js 18.0.0 or later
- PNPM (recommended), npm or Yarn
Steps
Run the command below.
npx @celo/celo-composer@latest create my-celo-appIn the interactive prompts, choose a template, wallet provider and smart-contract framework.
After generation, enter the project directory; if dependency installation was skipped, run
pnpm install.Start the development server with
pnpm dev.
Expected outcome
A generated Celo app project with the selected integrations and a documented command for starting its development server.
Guide limitations
- The default selections are a basic app, RainbowKit and Hardhat;
--yesskips prompts and uses defaults. - The x402 template requires a facilitator API key, and its setup instructions are in the generated
X402_SETUP.md.
