Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when a blockchain development or security workflow needs formal verification and can support the documented local dependencies or follow the referenced cloud-platform documentation.
Who it is for
- Smart-contract developers
- Blockchain security engineers
- Contributors building or extending formal-verification tooling
- Teams reviewing contract security through automated formal methods
Documented uses
- Set up a local formal-verification toolchain
- Run automated checks against smart-contract examples and verification configurations
- Support security analysis for EVM-based contracts
- Work with documented Solana and Stellar verification workflows
- Contribute changes to the prover repository
Requirements & limits
The public repository is accessible and licensed under GPL-3.0. Local setup is documented for Mac OS and Linux; the project also references a Certora cloud platform for users who do not want to build locally.
- Choose the local path if you need to build or contribute to the prover and can install JDK 19+, Python 3, SMT solvers, compiler tools, Rust and LLVM components.
- Account or service-access requirements for the cloud platform are not specified in the provided materials.
- The local workflow requires solver and compiler executables to be placed in PATH.
- Graphviz is optional and affects some visual reporting features.
- The repository instructions distinguish contributor build steps from user execution guidance in the separate documentation.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Build Certora Prover locally
Set up the local Certora Prover build from its public repository.
Before you start
- Mac OS or Linux
- JDK 19 or later
- Python 3 and matching pip
- Z3 and CVC5 in the system PATH
- Solidity compiler versions used by the contracts
Steps
Install the listed dependencies and place required solver and compiler executables in the system PATH.
Create a build-output directory, set the CERTORA environment variable to it, and add it to PATH.
Clone the repository with its submodules using the command below.
git clone --recurse-submodules https://github.com/Certora/CertoraProver.gitFrom the repository directory, compile the code with
./gradlew assemble. If needed, create a Python virtual environment and install
scripts/certora_cli_requirements.txt.
Expected outcome
A locally compiled Certora Prover build with the documented scripts, binaries and JARs placed in the CERTORA build-output path.
Guide limitations
- The instructions are for local contributor setup and do not document a cloud-platform run.
- Graphviz is optional, but some visual features such as TAC Reports may not work properly without it.
- The repository recommends consulting the user guide for running the prover on real-world contracts.
