Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Onebox when a task fits its built-in tools and you want to describe the desired result instead of finding and operating each utility yourself. For model-backed chat, account for the app's stated online connection to the chosen model.

Who it is for

  • Android users who want to describe a task and have an in-app agent coordinate supported tools.
  • People looking for image, document, bookkeeping and productivity utilities in the same app.
  • Android developers exploring an Apache-2.0 Kotlin agent-and-toolbox project.

Documented uses

  • Convert images into a PDF through an agent-directed tool workflow.
  • Record information from a bill screenshot in a ledger.
  • Create a to-do list from a request.
  • Use image and document utilities without separately searching for each tool.

Requirements & limits

The README links to Google Play and the official website for international access, and lists Chinese app-store channels. It describes the F-Droid listing as in review. The project calls the app free and says users can bring an OpenAI-compatible API key, including keys with free tiers.

  • The agent is described as invoking and chaining more than 90 in-app tools.
  • The project distinguishes on-device local-tool execution from online conversation with the selected AI model.
  • The README describes multiple mainstream models, custom AI engines and prompt management.
  • The repository declares the Apache-2.0 license and identifies Kotlin as its primary language.

Source-based practical guide

Build a Google-flavor Android debug APK

Build OneBox’s Google-flavor, arm64 debug APK from the repository.

Before you start

  • JDK 17
  • Use the bundled Gradle Wrapper 9.7.0

Steps

  1. Clone the repository with the command below.

    Documented command
    git clone --depth=1 https://github.com/wangzhishou/OneBox.git
  2. From the cloned repository, run ./gradlew :app:assembleGoogleArm64Debug.

  3. Find the generated APK in the build output.

Expected outcome

A Google-flavor arm64 debug APK is built.

Guide limitations

  • The documented Android targets are Compile SDK 37, Target SDK 37, and Min SDK 24.
  • Third-party service keys are empty by default, so corresponding features remain disabled.
  • Debug builds use Android Gradle Plugin’s default debug signing; this is not a production release build.
