Practical overview

When it fits

Use Bitcoin Rs when you need to explore or operate a Rust-based Bitcoin full node, or are developing Rust software that benefits from typed integration and indexing within the node. Review its build and verification choices before selecting a setup.

Who it is for

  • Developers building Rust applications or extensions that connect to a Bitcoin node.
  • Operators exploring an independently implemented Bitcoin full node.
  • Developers creating tools that use Bitcoin interfaces or node-owned indexing.

Documented uses

  • Run an independently operated Bitcoin full node.
  • Integrate Rust applications with a node through typed, in-process components.
  • Use node-owned chain indexing through Esplora-compatible APIs.
  • Build tools using Bitcoin interfaces and node services.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

  • The default quick-start build uses native Rust script verification and fjall storage; a separate build can enable libbitcoinkernel verification.
  • The project’s documented kernel path requires C++ dependencies, including cmake and libboost-dev on Debian/Ubuntu.
  • The node’s indexing includes an integrated script index, while wallet-specific keys, policies and metadata remain outside the node.
  • The README says current end-state benchmark cells are planned, not executed, and does not claim current performance superiority.
  • The documented default mainnet behavior uses a pinned assume-valid anchor; the README provides --assume-valid-height 0 to verify scripts from genesis.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Build and start the quick-start node

Build the quick-start binary and start a mainnet node with the documented default settings.

Before you start

  • Rust 2024 edition project toolchain and Cargo.
  • The bitcoin-rs repository, including the workspace package bitcoin-rs.
  • A system able to run the binary and provide storage for node data.

Steps

  1. From the repository, build with the command below.

    Documented command
cargo build --profile quickstart -p bitcoin-rs
  2. Run ./target/quickstart/bitcoin-rs --data-dir .bitcoin-rs.

  3. Use the documented JSON-RPC getblockchaininfo request at http://127.0.0.1:8332/ to check whether the node is responding and syncing.

Expected outcome

A mainnet node using `fjall` storage and native Rust script verification, with its data in `.bitcoin-rs` and JSON-RPC listening on `127.0.0.1:8332`.

Guide limitations

  • The quickstart profile is described for initial exploration, not sustained initial block download or benchmarking.
  • By default, mainnet skips historical script verification up to the pinned assume-valid anchor; --assume-valid-height 0 is documented to verify all scripts from genesis.
  • The JSON-RPC example uses the documented bitcoin-rs:bitcoin-rs credentials; review the getting-started documentation before choosing configuration for a deployment.

Build with the libbitcoinkernel validation engine

Build kernel support into the release binary and select it for script verification at runtime.

Before you start

  • The bitcoin-rs repository and Cargo.
  • C++ dependencies; the README specifies cmake and libboost-dev on Debian/Ubuntu.

Steps

  1. On Debian/Ubuntu, install the documented C++ dependencies.

  2. Build with the command below.

    Documented command
cargo build --release -p bitcoin-rs --features kernel
  3. Run the binary with ./target/release/bitcoin-rs --data-dir .bitcoin-rs --validation-engine kernel.

Expected outcome

A release build with `libbitcoinkernel` support selected as the script-validation engine.

Guide limitations

  • This path adds C++ dependencies compared with the kernel-free quick-start build.
  • The documented commands do not establish performance comparisons or compatibility guarantees.
