Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it when you already run Bitcoin Core and want a self-hosted web interface for node monitoring and peer management.

Who it is for

  • Bitcoin Core node operators who want browser-based node and peer monitoring.
  • Operators who need to review peer activity and manage peers through rules or ban lists.

Documented uses

  • Review connected peers, including reported country, ISP, client and traffic details.
  • Inspect node and blockchain information, recently received blocks, forks and mempool statistics.
  • Ban, disconnect or log peers through individual controls or rules.
  • Manage banned peers, exchange ban lists and generate iptables rejection rules.

Requirements & limits

The documented primary interface requires a configured BNM password and login. The project describes a cron-rule exception that uses a password-based token and can only apply rules.

  • Requires a running Bitcoin Core node and RPC credentials.
  • Manual hosting requires PHP 7.3.0 or later with curl and a web server; Docker is an alternative.
  • The wallet overview is informational only and has no wallet functionality.
  • The project warns that public exposure needs careful protection of access and peer data.
  • The repository specifies an MIT license.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Set up BNM with a web server

Configure the dashboard to connect to a running Bitcoin Core node and access it through a web server.

Before you start

  • Bitcoin Core 0.19.0.1 or later, running as bitcoind with -daemon, or bitcoin-qt with server=1 in bitcoin.conf.
  • A web server such as Apache, Nginx or another PHP server; PHP 7.3.0 or later with the curl extension.
  • The BNM repository and Bitcoin Core RPC credentials.

Steps

  1. Clone the BNM repository and confirm Bitcoin Core is running with the appropriate server setting.

  2. Copy src/Config.sample.php to src/Config.php, enter the Bitcoin Core RPC credentials, and set a BNM password.

  3. Place the BNM folder in the web server's served directory and ensure the server account can read and write the data folder.

  4. Open the folder URL in a browser and log in with the configured password.

Expected outcome

A browser-accessible BNM dashboard connected to the Bitcoin Core node.

Guide limitations

  • The project warns that public access increases security concerns; access restrictions and protection of the data folder should be configured.
  • The instructions note that BNM has no built-in brute-force protection.
Source-based practical guide

Set up BNM with Docker

Configure and launch the dashboard in Docker with access to a Bitcoin Core node.

Before you start

  • Bitcoin Core 0.19.0.1 or later, running with RPC access configured.
  • Docker; the project instructions also provide a docker-compose option.
  • The BNM repository and Bitcoin Core RPC credentials.

Steps

  1. Clone the repository and configure src/Config.php with the Bitcoin Core RPC credentials and a BNM password.

  2. Set the RPC IP in src/Config.php to the Docker network interface IP.

  3. Run either docker-compose up -d or the documented docker run command from the BNM folder, mounting that folder as /var/www/html.

  4. Add the documented rpcbind and rpcallowip settings to bitcoin.conf, then access BNM at the server IP on port 8000.

Expected outcome

A Docker-served BNM dashboard configured to connect to Bitcoin Core.

Guide limitations

  • The documented RPC settings and network address must match the operator's environment.
  • The project warns that publicly accessible deployments require attention to access controls and protection of peer data.
