Practical overview
When it fits
Use Anythingmcp when an AI client needs to work with systems that expose REST/OpenAPI, SOAP, GraphQL, OData or SQL interfaces, and you want a gateway to configure the resulting tools and access.
Who it is for
- Teams connecting AI clients to existing APIs, databases, ERP or e-commerce systems.
- Operators who want to self-host an MCP gateway or try its hosted cloud service.
- Developers who need to configure reusable connectors and control which operations an AI client can call.
Documented uses
- Convert API or database operations into MCP tools without writing a separate MCP server.
- Connect an AI client to existing business systems through one MCP endpoint.
- Restrict exposed fields and assign tool access by role.
Requirements & limits
The repository documents a self-hosted Docker Compose quick start and a hosted cloud trial described as free for seven days. The local quick start requires Docker 24 or later and OpenSSL; its first registered account becomes admin.
- The gateway supports REST/OpenAPI, SOAP, GraphQL, OData and SQL sources.
- Teams can use ready-made adapters or provide their own API definitions and database connections.
- Tool descriptions, fields and role access can be configured before tools are exposed to an AI client.
- The quick start is bound to localhost; external access follows a separate domain-and-certificate setup path.
- The project is TypeScript software licensed under AGPL-3.0.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Start a local Anythingmcp instance
Run the documented Docker Compose quick start on the local machine.
Before you start
- Docker 24 or later
- OpenSSL
- On macOS, Docker Desktop started first
Steps
Create an
anythingmcpdirectory and change into it.Download
docker-compose.quickstart.ymlfrom the repository's main branch.Use OpenSSL to generate values for
JWT_SECRETandENCRYPTION_KEYin a.envfile.Run the command below, then open
http://localhost:3000and register the first account, which becomes admin.docker compose up -d
Expected outcome
The gateway runs with its web interface at localhost:3000; the README lists the MCP endpoint at localhost:4000/mcp and API documentation at localhost:4000/api/docs.
Guide limitations
- The quick start binds to 127.0.0.1 and is intended for local access; the README directs operators needing access from other people or cloud AI clients to the separate setup script and deployment guide.
- Keep the generated
.env: losing the encryption key means connector credentials must be entered again. - The image is amd64-only; on Apple Silicon, the pinned platform runs under emulation.
