Practical overview
When it fits
Use AnyTool when building a Python-based agent that needs to discover and orchestrate MCP tools or use documented shell and GUI backends. Choose local mode for operating on the same machine, or investigate server mode for remote or separated execution.
Who it is for
- Developers integrating tool access into AI agents.
- Teams configuring agents to use MCP servers or shell and GUI backends.
- Builders who need separate agent and execution environments for remote-VM or isolated workflows.
Documented uses
- Add a tool-use layer to an AI agent.
- Register MCP servers and make their tools available for agent use.
- Configure agent roles and restrict which backends they can access.
- Choose local or server execution for shell and GUI operations.
Requirements & limits
The public GitHub repository identifies the project as MIT-licensed. Setup requires Python 3.12 or later and API keys in a local .env file.
- Python 3.12 or later is specified for setup.
- MCP servers are registered in anytool/config/config_mcp.json, with tools discovered from registered servers.
- Shell and GUI backends support local and server modes; server mode requires a running Flask service and platform-specific dependencies.
- The repository lists macOS, Linux and Windows, but desktop-control dependencies vary by operating system.
- Configuration includes backend access scope and security policies with runtime confirmation for sensitive operations.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up AnyTool and register an MCP server
Prepare the Python environment and configure an MCP server for tool discovery.
Before you start
- Python 3.12 or later
- Conda
- Repository files and requirements
- API keys added to a local .env file
- MCP server connection details and any required credentials
Steps
Clone the AnyTool repository and enter its directory.
Create and activate a Conda environment with Python 3.12 and ffmpeg.
Install the listed dependencies with pip install -r requirements.txt.
Create a .env file with API keys, then configure an MCP server in anytool/config/config_mcp.json using the example configuration as a reference.
Expected outcome
A configured environment with an MCP server registered for AnyTool's tool discovery.
Guide limitations
- The guide documents setup and registration, not a verified successful connection or tool execution.
- MCP server-specific dependencies and credentials may be required.
