Practical overview
When it fits
Use Mintlayer Core when you need to operate a Mintlayer node, choose among its bundled wallet workflows, or run its API server components for an application.
Who it is for
- Operators running a Mintlayer mainnet or testnet node.
- Users managing coins and assets through the included wallet tools.
- Developers running a node with API server components for application use.
- Developers interested in building or contributing to the Rust codebase.
Documented uses
- Run a node that manages blockchain blocks and peer-to-peer communication.
- Manage coins and wallet files using the command-line wallet alongside a node.
- Use a GUI that combines node and wallet functions, including staking and delegation.
- Run a wallet RPC service and communicate with it using the wallet CLI.
- Run node and API server components for application use without a wallet.
Requirements & limits
The README says mainnet and testnet nodes can be run using pre-built binaries from the Mintlayer website or by compiling the source. The repository is public and MIT-licensed.
- The project offers distinct command-line, GUI, wallet RPC and API-server components; select the arrangement that matches the operational task.
- The README describes node-gui as a simpler option but notes that it is almost always behind other tools in development.
- Source builds require Rust; Debian or Ubuntu Linux builds additionally require build-essential.
- The repository is Rust-based and MIT-licensed.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Build a Mintlayer Core executable from source
Prepare the documented Rust and Linux build prerequisites and build a release executable.
Before you start
- Rust compiler and Cargo installed.
- On Debian or Ubuntu Linux, install build-essential.
Steps
Install Rust and relaunch the terminal.
Check that Rust is available by running cargo --version.
On Debian or Ubuntu Linux, install build-essential.
From the source code, build a release executable with cargo build --release --bin ; the executable is placed in target/release.
Expected outcome
A release executable for the selected Mintlayer Core program is built in target/release.
Guide limitations
- The README notes that compilation can fail when dependencies are missing.
- The documented Linux dependency command is specific to Debian and Ubuntu; other distributions require their equivalent dependencies.
