Mixin

Mixin Kernel is a Go reference implementation of a distributed ledger for digital assets. It combines UTXO transaction state, parallel per-node chains, a cross-referenced DAG, and collective signatures for Byzantine-fault-tolerant consensus.

Practical overview

When it fits

Use the repository when you need source-level access to Mixin’s UTXO, parallel-chain, and BFT-DAG design, or want to follow its documented local build and test-network workflow.

Who it is for

  • Developers studying or building distributed-ledger and consensus systems.
  • Engineers who want to compile the Kernel, run a local test network, or use its command-line and RPC tools.

Documented uses

  • Build a Kernel node from source and check the resulting binary version.
  • Generate and start a seven-node local test network.
  • Create and decode addresses, inspect graph data, and access a node through RPC.
  • Build, inspect, and submit transactions using the repository’s documented command-line workflow.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

The repository is public and licensed under GPL-3.0. The documented build uses Go and make.

  • This is node software and a reference implementation, not a hosted ledger interface.
  • Consensus participation has a documented 13,439 XIN pledge and an automated acceptance sequence; the README warns that a finalized pledge has no normal cancellation or refund path.
  • Node configuration requires key and network settings, and RPC and profiling access need network-boundary controls.
  • The documented transfer example places private keys in command-line arguments, which may be exposed through process inspection or shell history.
  • Deposits require custodian authorization; external reserve checks and withdrawals depend on separate custody services.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Build the Mixin Kernel command-line binary

Build the repository’s Kernel binary and check its version.

Before you start

  • A clean checkout of the Mixin repository
  • The Go version declared in go.mod
  • Make

Steps

  1. Clone the repository and change into its directory.

  2. Run make from the clean checkout.

  3. Run ./mixin --version.

Expected outcome

A built mixin binary whose version includes the Git commit identifier.

Guide limitations

  • The README says plain go build produces a binary that refuses to start while its version contains BUILD_VERSION.
  • The make target restores config/reader.go from Git before and after compiling.
Source-based practical guide

Set up and query a local seven-node test network

Generate the documented test-network configuration and query one running node.

Before you start

  • A built mixin binary
  • Seven separate node processes or terminals
  • The generated P2P UDP ports 5851–5857 and RPC TCP ports 6861–6867 available

Steps

  1. Run ./mixin setuptestnet to generate configuration and genesis data for seven nodes.

  2. Start each node with ./mixin kernel --dir and its corresponding generated directory, from /tmp/mixin-6861 through /tmp/mixin-6867.

  3. Query a running node with ./mixin --node http://127.0.0.1:6861 getinfo.

Expected outcome

A local seven-node test network configuration and a documented RPC query for node information.

Guide limitations

  • Each setup run overwrites configuration and genesis files in the generated directories but leaves database contents in place; use clean directories for an independent network.
  • The generated test custodian credentials authorize deposits on that test network and should be retained if it will be reused.
