Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when your work requires source-level access to MultiversX node behavior, a self-hosted blockchain process or development around the MultiversX protocol.
Who it is for
- MultiversX node operators
- Blockchain protocol developers
- Infrastructure engineers building MultiversX integrations
- Developers preparing protocol testing environments
Documented uses
- Build and run a self-hosted MultiversX node
- Develop or modify MultiversX protocol and node software
- Create tooling that integrates with a MultiversX mainnet node
- Prepare a testing environment for MultiversX protocol changes
- Expose and visualize documented peer-to-peer metrics
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and open source under GPL-3.0. Its documented workflow requires building from source with Go 1.17.6 or newer and uses command-line tools.
- The implementation is written in Go and is built from source rather than installed as a consumer application.
- The repository documents separate paths for joining the MultiversX testnet and starting a node in a separate network.
- Node identity and block-signing credentials are generated through a repository-provided keygenerator binary.
- The codebase covers peer-to-peer networking, consensus, sharding, execution, smart-contract integration and state synchronization.
- The documented metrics workflow uses Prometheus, libp2p dashboard files, Docker Compose and Grafana.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up p2p metrics dashboards
Configure the documented Prometheus and Grafana workflow for viewing node p2p metrics.
Before you start
- A built and runnable node
- Docker and Docker Compose
- The go-libp2p repository and its dashboard files
Steps
Start the node with the --p2p-prometheus-metrics flag.
Clone go-libp2p and add the documented DS_PROMETHEUS datasource block to the swarm dashboard configuration.
Update the host.docker.internal port in prometheus.yml to match the node REST API port, which defaults to 8080 in the README.
From the dashboards directory, run the documented Docker Compose command with the base and Linux compose files.
Open the documented local Grafana dashboards address.
Expected outcome
The documented dashboard workflow is configured to expose p2p metrics through Prometheus and Grafana.
Guide limitations
- The README notes a temporary dashboard configuration change and states that Docker may require super-user privileges depending on installation.
- This is a documented setup sequence, not a verification that the dashboard is working in a particular environment.
