Practical overview

When it fits

Use AI SDK when building a TypeScript application that needs supported model-provider integrations or streaming and UI-oriented building blocks for AI features.

Who it is for

  • TypeScript developers integrating AI models into applications.
  • Teams building AI interfaces or agents with JavaScript frameworks.

Documented uses

  • Connect an application to a supported AI model provider through a common SDK interface.
  • Build a streaming chat interface.
  • Develop an AI-powered application or agent using a JavaScript framework.

Requirements & limits

The official homepage describes AI SDK as open source.

  • Check that the model provider you plan to use is supported.
  • The documented ecosystem includes React, Next.js, Vue, Svelte and Node.js.

Source-based practical guide

Generate text with an AI SDK model

Use the AI SDK Core `generateText` API with a model identifier and prompt.

Before you start

  • A TypeScript project using the AI SDK package ai.
  • A supported model provider and model identifier; the documentation example uses anthropic/claude-sonnet-5.5.

Steps

  1. Import generateText from ai.

  2. Call generateText with a model identifier and a prompt.

  3. Read the generated text from the returned text value.

Expected outcome

The call returns generated text in the `text` field.

Guide limitations

  • The documentation example does not show provider credentials or provider setup.
  • The model identifier and example output do not establish availability or behavior for other providers or models.
