Practical overview
When it fits
Use SuperCoder when repository work is performed from a desktop and the developer wants the agent, source workspace, approval flow, and review controls centered locally. Enable the Context Engine when text-only navigation is insufficient for a larger codebase and its additional local services are acceptable.
Who it is for
- Developers working with local software repositories
- Teams evaluating an open-source desktop coding workflow
- Users who want approval, checkpoint, diff-review, and rewind controls around agent-assisted changes
Documented uses
- Explore files and interact with a repository through an agent
- Ask questions about a codebase and develop a change plan
- Modify code while reviewing diffs and using checkpoints or rewind
- Navigate larger repositories with optional structural and graph-aware retrieval
- Configure model access directly against a supported provider API
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and MIT-licensed. The documented workflow requires building from source; prebuilt downloadable binaries are described as forthcoming. Provider access requires the user to configure a base URL, API key, and model.
- The application sends model requests directly to the provider configured by the user rather than through a SuperCoder backend.
- The desktop app is built with Tauri 2 and React over a pure-Rust agent core.
- The optional Context Engine runs locally through Docker Compose and combines tree-sitter, vector, call-graph, and BM25 retrieval.
- The current documented interface is the desktop application; a headless runner is listed as future work, so server-side automation requires modification.
- The project supports Ask, Plan, and Coding modes along with subagents, skills, tool approval, checkpoints, rewind, diff review, terminal interaction, and file exploration.

Build and configure the SuperCoder desktop app
Set up the desktop application from source and connect it to a configured language-model provider.
Before you start
- Stable Rust
- Tauri 2 system prerequisites for the operating system
- Node.js 20 or newer and npm
- A provider base URL, API key, and model
Steps
Change to the apps/desktop directory and install the npm dependencies.
Run the documented Tauri development or build command.
On first launch, open Settings and add the provider base URL, API key, and model.
Create a session, choose a folder and mode, and begin working with the repository.
Expected outcome
A locally built SuperCoder desktop application configured for a user-selected provider.
Guide limitations
- The repository states that prebuilt downloadable binaries are not yet available.
- This recipe documents setup and configuration; it does not establish successful execution on a particular machine.
Enable the optional local Context Engine
Add graph-aware repository retrieval to the SuperCoder desktop workflow.
Before you start
- A configured SuperCoder desktop application
- Docker with Compose
- A server-side embedding key set through the Context Engine environment configuration
Steps
Change to services/context-engine and copy the example environment file to .env.
Set SUPERCODER_OPENAI_API_KEY in the environment file.
Start the service with the documented Docker Compose command.
Enable Context engine in the application Settings.
Expected outcome
The desktop agent can use the documented Context Engine integration for codebase search and codebase graph queries.
Guide limitations
- The Context Engine is optional and requires its additional local service configuration.
- The recipe does not establish retrieval quality or compatibility for a particular repository.
Compare options for AI coding assistance
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
| Project | Documented purpose | Platform | Access and requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Supercoder | Explore files and interact with a repository through an agent | Desktop, Linux, macOS, Self-hosted | The repository is public and MIT-licensed. The documented workflow requires building from source; prebuilt downloadable binaries are described as forthcoming. Provider access requires the user to configure a base URL, API key, and model. |
| Llmcode | Inspect a project's directory structure with `/tree`. | CLI | The documented setup requires an API key and supports an API base URL and model setting. The project is open source under Apache-2.0. |
| Klaat Code | Open a project directory for terminal-based coding assistance. | CLI, Server | The README provides a global npm installation command and documents browser sign-in with a KlaatAI account. It also identifies the repository as open source under Apache 2.0. |
