Practical overview
When it fits
Use Jechain for educational demonstrations, source-level experimentation, and coordinated test networks where its changing smart-contract and RPC components are acceptable.
Who it is for
- Developers studying or modifying blockchain node software.
- Students and educators demonstrating distributed systems and smart contracts.
- Builders prototyping payment-system or cryptocurrency concepts.
- Operators testing peer-to-peer blockchain behaviour with coordinated nodes.
Documented uses
- Run a self-hosted blockchain node.
- Connect peers and experiment with block, transaction, and chain synchronization.
- Mine and verify proof-of-work blocks.
- Explore smart contracts through the jelscript language.
- Provide blockchain data and network interaction to applications through RPC.
Requirements & limits
The project is publicly available as open-source software under the Apache 2.0 license. The documented setup is self-hosted and uses Node.js, npm, and a downloaded release.
- The project is experimental rather than production-ready.
- Smart contracts are a proof of concept and use a limited language that may change.
- RPC is available for application interaction but is described as early-stage.
- A network requires multiple nodes communicating with one another; the repository says no official Jechain network exists.
- Public node operation requires port forwarding.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up a Jechain node
Install and configure a self-hosted Jechain node.
Before you start
- Node.js v16 or higher.
- The latest release of npm.
- Windows, Linux, or macOS system with a dual-core CPU, 8GB RAM, and an SSD or HDD.
- A Jechain release downloaded from the project’s GitHub releases page.
Steps
Extract the release archive and open a terminal in the Jechain folder.
Run the command below to install the required packages.
npm installFrom
./utils/, run the command below to generate an address, public key, and private key.node keygen.jsEdit
config.jsonto set the node and RPC ports, peers, node address, private key, and optional mining, logging, RPC, or chain-synchronization settings.Run the command below to start the node.
node .
Expected outcome
A configured Jechain node is started locally and can be prepared for peer connections or RPC interaction.
Guide limitations
- The repository describes Jechain as experimental and educational.
- The RPC feature is in an early stage and may change.
- An official Jechain network does not currently exist; multiple operators must coordinate an experimental network.
