Practical overview

When it fits

Use Joystream when you need repository-level software for operating or extending a Substrate blockchain network, including its node, runtime, infrastructure and client applications.

Who it is for

  • Blockchain engineers building or modifying Joystream network software
  • Infrastructure operators running nodes and supporting network services
  • Front-end developers creating applications for a Joystream network
  • Contributors testing or improving the repository’s components

Documented uses

  • Build and run a Joystream full node
  • Operate a network with the supplied runtime and runtime modules
  • Run a local development network for software work
  • Provide storage, query and distribution infrastructure
  • Build or adapt front-end applications
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

The repository is publicly accessible and identified as open source under GPL-3.0. The documented development environment targets GNU/Linux or server use; no hosted-service pricing or account requirements are provided.

  • It is a monorepo spanning core blockchain software, infrastructure services, front ends and tools, so component selection matters.
  • The documented build environment requires Rust, Node.js, Yarn Classic and Docker.
  • The repository includes a local development-network workflow as well as a documented full-node build path.
  • The software is Substrate-based and primarily written in Rust, with JavaScript and TypeScript tooling also referenced.
  • The README points to a separate handbook procedure for full-node and validator setup on the main network.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Set up a local Joystream development network

Prepare the repository and start the documented local development network.

Before you start

  • GNU/Linux is recommended; the README specifies Ubuntu 20.04 or newer and glibc 2.28 or later for the stated Node.js setup.
  • Rust, Node.js, Yarn Classic and Docker are required.
  • A cloned Joystream repository.

Steps

  1. Run ./setup.sh after cloning the repository, or use ./setup.sh --no-volta when using your own Node.js version manager.

  2. Build the local npm packages with yarn build.

  3. Build the Joystream node Docker testing image with RUNTIME_PROFILE=TESTING yarn build:node:docker.

  4. Start the local development network with yarn start.

Expected outcome

The documented local development network startup sequence is prepared and invoked.

Guide limitations

  • The source documents setup and startup commands but does not establish a successful run in this profile.
  • The repository README states that older operating systems may require changing the Volta Node.js version in the root package configuration.
