Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when a Solana application needs a documented gRPC path for high-performance blockchain data streams and the team can work with validator-side infrastructure.
Who it is for
- Solana developers building real-time data services
- Infrastructure teams operating server or Linux-based systems
- Developers creating monitoring, ingestion, alerting, or indexing backends
Documented uses
- Stream Solana slots, blocks, and transactions
- Receive deshred pre-execution transaction data
- Consume account update notifications
- Connect downstream services through gRPC
- Configure listener security and request authentication
Requirements & limits
The repository is public, open source, and identified as AGPL-3.0 licensed.
- It is built around Solana's Geyser interface and implemented in Rust.
- The documented stream types cover slots, blocks, transactions, deshred pre-execution transactions, and account updates.
- Listeners support TCP or Unix domain socket address formats.
- TLS is documented for listeners, while TLS is ignored for Unix domain sockets.
- Authentication options include an HTTP resolver, a local JSON mapping file, and trusted metadata.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Configure the validator plugin and check its configuration
Prepare a Solana validator to use the Yellowstone Geyser plugin and validate the plugin configuration.
Before you start
- A Solana validator environment.
- The repository's Geyser plugin configuration file at yellowstone-grpc-geyser/config.json.
- The repository and its documented Rust tooling.
Steps
Configure the validator with the documented Geyser plugin configuration: solana-validator --geyser-plugin-config yellowstone-grpc-geyser/config.json
Run the documented configuration check: cargo-fmt && cargo run --bin config-check -- --config yellowstone-grpc-geyser/config.json
Expected outcome
The validator is configured to reference the Yellowstone Geyser plugin, and the repository's configuration-check procedure has been run.
Guide limitations
- The documented steps do not establish deployment, authentication, or broader operational requirements.
- Block reconstruction can produce blocks with zero entries for blocks generated on validators because of the documented BlockMeta limitation.
