Agent Memory & RAG

GrayMatter

GrayMatter is a local, embeddable memory layer for AI agents, provided as an MCP server and a Go library. It supports semantic recall and a knowledge graph, allowing compatible agents to retrieve selected facts accumulated across sessions.

Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use GrayMatter when an agent needs to retrieve selected information from earlier sessions, or when a local Go application needs an embeddable memory layer.

Who it is for

  • People configuring persistent memory for MCP-compatible coding assistants.
  • Developers embedding local memory in Go-based agent applications.
  • Agent builders who want workflows to retrieve relevant facts before a run.

Documented uses

  • Install a local memory service and prepare an MCP client for it.
  • Save and retrieve facts across agent sessions using memory tools.
  • Embed memory in a Go-based agent application.
  • Maintain a knowledge graph of facts accumulated over time.

Requirements & limits

The homepage states that GrayMatter is free, offline and requires no account. The quick-start guide provides CLI installation options for macOS, Linux and Windows.

  • GrayMatter is described as both an MCP server and a Go library, supporting client-based setup and embedding in Go applications.
  • The quick-start guide provides a doctor command, but explicitly says JSON initialization output does not confirm live client readiness.
  • Project and worktree routing affects which memory store MCP and hooks use; the guide advises keeping them pointed at the intended root or the same explicit store location.
  • Knowledge-graph activation is an optional setup choice using graymatter init --kg.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Install GrayMatter and prepare an MCP client

Install the CLI, create project memory setup and check the local configuration.

Before you start

  • A supported installation route: Homebrew on macOS or Linux, Scoop on Windows, Go, or a pre-built release binary.
  • An MCP client/editor to configure; the guide can configure detected clients.

Steps

  1. Install GrayMatter using one of the documented package-manager, Go, or binary options.

  2. Run graymatter init to create .graymatter/, write MCP configuration for detected clients and add a memory block to CLAUDE.md or AGENTS.md.

  3. Run graymatter doctor to check the setup, then restart the editor.

Expected outcome

The project is prepared for GrayMatter and the guide says seven memory tools are live after restarting the editor.

Guide limitations

  • graymatter init --json reports preparation, not live client readiness.
  • Global initialization does not globalize project-scoped MCP configurations; those clients still need setup in each repository.
  • Setup across repositories or worktrees requires correct project-root or store routing.
