Practical overview
When it fits
Use WEB3 Onboard when wallet onboarding is an application feature rather than a standalone wallet product, especially when the dapp needs multiple wallet integrations, multiple accounts or network switching.
Who it is for
- Developers building web3 applications
- Teams adding wallet onboarding to Ethereum or Polygon applications
- Developers needing multi-wallet or multi-account connection flows
- Applications that need user-facing chain or network switching
Documented uses
- Connect wallets to a decentralized application
- Support multiple wallets and multiple accounts within a wallet
- Let users switch between configured chains or networks
- Provide an account center for managing wallet connections and networks
- Selectively include wallet packages in a web application
Requirements & limits
The project is available as a public MIT-licensed GitHub repository. The documented quickstart uses NPM or Yarn and requires application-configured wallet modules and chain RPC URLs.
- Wallet integrations are separated into packages, so developers can include only selected wallet dependencies.
- The library supports multiple wallets and multiple accounts within each wallet.
- Dynamic imports load wallet dependencies when selected, reducing the initial dependency load described in the README.
- The account center provides persistent connection and network management, with a minimal mobile version.
- Provider standardization is documented against EIP-1193, EIP-1102, EIP-3085 and EIP-3326.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up a wallet connection in a web3 app
Install the core library and injected-wallet package, configure chains, and initialize a wallet connection flow.
Before you start
- A web3 application
- NPM or Yarn
- The @web3-onboard/core and @web3-onboard/injected-wallets packages
- An ethers installation if ethers provider and signer use is required
- RPC URLs for the chains configured by the application
Steps
Install @web3-onboard/core, @web3-onboard/injected-wallets and, when needed, ethers with NPM or Yarn.
Create the injected wallet module.
Initialize Onboard with the selected wallet module and chain definitions containing chain IDs, tokens, labels and RPC URLs.
Call the wallet connection method and use the returned wallet provider; the README shows passing it to ethers for provider and signer creation.
Expected outcome
The application has an initialized Onboard instance and a documented path to obtain connected wallet data and use its provider with ethers.
Guide limitations
- The quickstart demonstrates injected wallets and selected example networks; other wallet modules require their corresponding packages and documentation.
- The guide describes the documented setup and example flow, not independent execution or compatibility verification.
Compare options for Wallet connections
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
