Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when collection administration or document search needs to be part of a terminal-based development, testing or debugging workflow.
Who it is for
- Developers who need to inspect and manage vector database collections from a terminal.
- Teams working with more than one of the vector database systems named in the project documentation.
Documented uses
- List or inspect collections in a configured vector database.
- Create or delete collections during development and testing.
- Search documents within a collection while debugging.
Requirements & limits
The README documents Homebrew installation for macOS and Linux, or building from source with Go 1.26.6. The repository lists an MIT license.
- The README lists 11 vector databases, but support status varies: Redis is marked experimental, and Pinecone and Elasticsearch are marked beta.
- The quick-start configuration shown is for Weaviate and asks for a Weaviate URL, Weaviate API key and OpenAI API key.
- The project documents different local and cloud support across its database list; consult the database-specific setup guide for the intended backend.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install Weave CLI from source
Build the CLI binary from the project repository.
Before you start
- Go 1.26.6
- Git
Steps
Clone https://github.com/maximilien/weave-cli.git.
Change into the weave-cli directory.
Run ./setup.sh.
Run ./build.sh; the README identifies the resulting binary as bin/weave.
Expected outcome
A built CLI binary at bin/weave.
Guide limitations
- This recipe covers building the binary only; it does not configure a database connection.
Configure a Weaviate connection and check it
Set up the documented Weaviate quick-start configuration and run its diagnostic commands.
Before you start
- Weave CLI installed
- Weaviate URL
- Weaviate API key
- OpenAI API key
Steps
Run weave config create --env.
Follow the prompts to enter WEAVIATE_URL, WEAVIATE_API_KEY and OPENAI_API_KEY.
Run weave doctor to diagnose the setup, or run weave health check to check database health.
Run weave vdb list to list configured databases.
Expected outcome
The README documents commands for diagnosing the setup, checking database health and listing configured databases.
Guide limitations
- This quick-start recipe is specific to Weaviate; the project directs users of other databases to their setup guides.
