Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you want to search a mixed collection of supported files and have an LLM answer questions using relevant retrieved content as context.
Who it is for
- Windows users who want to ask questions across collections of documents, images or audio files.
- People building a searchable file knowledge base that uses retrieved context with an LLM.
Documented uses
- Index supported file types into a vector database.
- Extract document text, create image descriptions and transcribe audio speech.
- Search indexed material by typing or recording a question.
- Send retrieved context to an LLM to generate an answer, with optional spoken output.
Requirements & limits
The README describes the application as Windows-only. It can run in CPU-only mode; an NVIDIA GPU is optional for GPU acceleration.
- The documented platform is Windows, and setup requires Python 3.11–3.14, Git, Git LFS and Visual C++ Build Tools.
- The README lists broad document, image and audio ingestion; it describes audio transcription but does not list video among the supported input formats.
- LLM response generation is a separate stage from indexing and retrieval; the README names several LLM options but does not give configuration instructions for each.
- Without a supported NVIDIA GPU, the installer uses CPU-only mode with smaller models.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install and open Vectordb Plugin on Windows
Prepare the documented Windows environment and launch the desktop application.
Before you start
- Microsoft Windows
- Python 3.11–3.14
- Git and Git LFS
- Visual C++ Build Tools
Steps
Download the latest release and extract it.
Open the extracted folder’s src directory.
Create a virtual environment with the command below and activate it with
.\Scripts\activate.python -m venv .Run the command below, then the command below.
python setup_windows.pypython gui.py
Expected outcome
The application’s GUI opens after setup.
Guide limitations
- The README documents Windows only.
- An NVIDIA GPU is optional; the setup selects CPU-only installation when no supported NVIDIA GPU is found. The README also documents
python setup_windows.py --force-cpufor forcing CPU-only installation.
Compare options for Vector search
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
| Project | Documented purpose | Platform | Access and requirements |
