Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it when an agent needs more than a chat response: browser access, terminal commands, repository work, shared team context or a returned file. It is also relevant when work needs to be reviewed in a live thread or paused for approval.

Who it is for

  • Teams coordinating coding agents across repositories and shared context.
  • Users who need browser research, terminal execution or generated project files.
  • Organizations evaluating a self-hosted workspace for agent workflows.

Documented uses

  • Research through a browser and terminal and return a report.
  • Work in repositories and produce code changes or pull requests.
  • Create websites, spreadsheets, documents and other supported files.
  • Reuse team procedures through versioned skills and playbooks.
  • Run recurring or approval-gated agent tasks.

Requirements & limits

The repository is public, open source and licensed under AGPL-3.0. The project describes itself as alpha software. Supported models, login methods and tools depend on the engine adapter and self-hosted configuration.

  • The supported engine set includes Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode and Pi.
  • The workspace combines repositories, terminal, browser, skills, knowledge and team memory.
  • Daytona and CubeSandbox provide isolated Linux workstations with desktop access and screen recording.
  • Slack, GitHub, REST API, schedules and connector-based services are documented integration surfaces.
  • Postgres 16+ with pgvector and Bun are listed in the quick-start prerequisites.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
