Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when building an Unreal project that needs documented LLM chat or structured outputs, or when connecting an MCP client to supported Unreal Editor operations.
Who it is for
- Unreal Engine developers adding model-backed chat or structured responses to game projects
- Developers connecting an MCP client to Unreal Editor workflows
Documented uses
- Send chat requests to documented language-model services from C++ or Blueprints.
- Request structured outputs from the OpenAI integration.
- Connect an MCP client to the Unreal Editor for operations such as creating scene objects and modifying properties.
- Explore documented use cases including NPC behavior, speech, image generation and 3D generation, subject to the specific plugin or provider integration.
Requirements & limits
The repository describes this plugin as free and publishes it under the MIT license.
- The README identifies Unreal Engine 5.4–5.7+ and C++17.
- MCP setup has additional Python, FastMCP and Unreal Python Editor Script Plugin prerequisites.
- The free plugin’s listed integrations are distinct from the separately presented Pro plugins and their broader model catalogs.
- Known MCP issues include node-connection failures and no undo/redo support.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Connect an Unreal project to an MCP client
Configure the plugin’s MCP server for use with Claude Desktop, Claude Code CLI or Cursor.
Before you start
- An Unreal project with the plugin installed
- Python and FastMCP installed
- Unreal Engine’s Python Editor Script Plugin enabled
- One of the documented MCP clients
Steps
Add the repository as a Git submodule at Plugins/GenerativeAISupport, regenerate project files and enable the plugin in Unreal Editor.
Install FastMCP with pip and enable the Python Editor Script Plugin in Unreal.
Add an MCP server entry to the relevant client configuration, pointing its command to Python and its arguments to the plugin’s mcp_server.py; use the documented localhost and port settings.
With autostart disabled, run mcp_server.py, open or restart the MCP client, then run the plugin’s unreal_socket_server.py through Unreal’s Tools > Run Python Script.
Expected outcome
The README describes prompting the configured client to use Unreal Engine through MCP.
Guide limitations
- The README lists MCP node-connection failures and no undo/redo support among known issues.
- The documented setup does not establish compatibility beyond the named clients and configuration examples.
