Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use TurboLLM when you want to run models locally and choose among its documented inference engines rather than rely on a cloud-hosted chat service.

Who it is for

  • People who want to run language models on their own desktop or Android device.
  • Users choosing among local inference engines for their models and hardware.

Documented uses

  • Start a local model runner and chat with models through a browser interface.
  • Select or change the inference engine used for a model.
  • Use an available CPU fallback when a GPU is not present.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

The site says TurboLLM runs locally with no account and works offline. Desktop setup requires Node.js 22 or newer; Android is documented as a standalone app without Node.js or a terminal.

  • Desktop setup requires Node.js 22 or newer; Android uses a separate standalone app.
  • A GPU is recommended but not required, with CPU fallback documented.
  • Some engines have specific platform and hardware requirements: MLX is for Apple Silicon, while vLLM and SGLang are listed for Linux with NVIDIA.
  • The default desktop daemon address is http://127.0.0.1:6996.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Start TurboLLM on desktop

Launch the local daemon and open the browser interface.

Before you start

  • Windows, macOS or Linux
  • Node.js 22 or newer
  • A GPU is recommended but not required

Steps

  1. Open a terminal and run the command below.

    Documented command
    npx turbollm
  2. On first run, allow TurboLLM to detect the GPU and download a matching inference engine.

  3. Use the browser interface opened by the daemon at http://127.0.0.1:6996.

Expected outcome

The local daemon starts and opens the Chat screen, ready to load a model.

Guide limitations

  • The desktop instructions require Node.js 22 or newer.
  • A GPU is optional; a CPU build is provided as a fallback.
  • The documented desktop setup does not apply to Android, which is a standalone app.
