Practical overview
When it fits
Use the wallet for the account-management and Bitcoin card transaction purposes described by its repository; use its developer documentation when building or comparing the Android package.
Who it is for
- Android users looking for a wallet to create and manage crypto accounts.
- Developers interested in building or examining an Android crypto wallet from JavaScript source.
Documented uses
- Create and manage crypto accounts.
- Buy or sell Bitcoin using Visa or Mastercard, as described by the repository.
- Build a release APK from the published source.
- Compare a locally built package with a similar Google Play package using the repository's verification script.
Requirements & limits
- The repository lists Bitcoin, Dogecoin, Ethereum and BNB Chain among the supported ecosystems.
- The README describes card-based buying and selling for Bitcoin, not for every listed ecosystem.
- The documented Android build uses Ubuntu 16.04, Node.js 10.x and OpenJDK 8.
- The README warns that Google Play package metadata, signatures and build-specific values can differ from a local build.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Build the Android release APK from source
Prepare the documented environment and build an APK from the Trustee Wallet repository.
Before you start
- Ubuntu 16.04, as specified for the build steps
- build-essential
- Node.js 10.x
- OpenJDK 8
- Android SDK setup and acceptance of its license
Steps
Install the listed build tools, Node.js 10.x and OpenJDK 8, and set JAVA_HOME as shown in the README.
Raise the inotify watch limit and prepare the Android SDK directory, ANDROID_HOME and SDK license file using the documented commands.
Clone the repository, enter its directory, then run npm install, npx jetifier, rm -f shim.js and ./node_modules/.bin/rn-nodeify --hack --install.
Enter the android directory and run ./gradlew assembleRelease; the README identifies the output as app/build/outputs/apk/release/app-release.apk.
Expected outcome
The documented procedure produces a release APK at the stated path if the build completes.
Guide limitations
- The instructions specify Ubuntu 16.04 and older tool versions; compatibility with other environments is not established here.
- The procedure documents a build process, not a verification of a successful build.
Compare a local Android build with the Google Play package
Use the repository's documented script to compare decoded contents of a locally built universal APK and a similar package downloaded from Google Play.
Before you start
- A working Docker environment
- The Trustee Wallet repository and its verification script
Steps
Clone the repository and change into its directory.
Run ./docker/verify_android_build.sh.
Review the reported differences; use the documented Docker image and diff commands to inspect files that need closer analysis.
Expected outcome
The script builds a Docker image, builds a universal APK, downloads a similar Google Play APK, decodes both with apktool and compares their folders.
Guide limitations
- The README says Google Play changes packages with metadata and signatures, and build-specific values can differ, so exact package identity is not expected.
- The repository's example describes some differences as requiring further analysis; a comparison alone does not establish that every difference is inconsequential.
