Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when an agent needs documented capabilities beyond model responses, especially access to local resources, external services, automation environments, or multi-agent workflows.
Who it is for
- Python developers building AI agents
- Teams creating self-hosted or server-based agent systems
- Builders integrating agents with files, APIs, cloud services, browsers, desktops, or other agents
Documented uses
- Give an agent reusable tools for reading, writing, and editing files.
- Let an agent execute shell commands or Python code snippets.
- Connect agent workflows to APIs, Slack, AWS services, web content, and external MCP servers.
- Coordinate nested agents, swarms, or deterministic multi-agent graphs.
- Add calculations, scheduling, journaling, media processing, or desktop and browser actions.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and licensed under Apache-2.0. Installation is documented through pip, with optional extras and a separate development setup.
- The package supports a broad range of agent actions, from file and API work to browser and desktop automation.
- Optional tools have separate dependencies and should be selected according to the workflow.
- Powerful capabilities include code execution, filesystem access, cloud API access, external-server connections, and browser or desktop control.
- The repository identifies the tools as experimental, making security review an important deployment consideration.
- The library is an agent tool layer, so builders need an agent environment that can invoke the provided tools.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install the Strands Agents Tools library
Set up the Python package and optionally add dependencies for selected tools.
Before you start
- Python environment
- Python package installer
- For development installation: a cloned repository and virtual environment
Steps
Install the core package with pip install strands-agents-tools.
For optional capabilities, install the documented extras for memory, browser, RSS, or computer tools.
For development, clone the repository, enter its directory, create and activate a virtual environment, install the package in editable mode with development dependencies, and install pre-commit hooks.
Expected outcome
The core library or a development installation is available for building agents with its tools.
Guide limitations
- Optional tools require their corresponding extra dependencies.
- The repository describes the tools as experimental and recommends an independent security review before production use.
Compare options for Agent orchestration
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
