Practical overview
When it fits
Use Tinycortex when an application needs an embeddable, local-first memory layer whose canonical content remains readable and inspectable rather than relying on an opaque hosted memory service.
Who it is for
- Developers building AI agents or assistants
- Rust developers embedding memory into services or applications
- Teams wanting inspectable, user-readable memory files
- Builders creating local-first LLM tools
Documented uses
- Store useful information while filtering low-value content at ingestion
- Keep canonical memory in Markdown files that can be inspected and rebuilt into indexes
- Retrieve context using keyword, semantic, vector, graph, summary-tree and freshness signals
- Embed an AI memory layer into a self-hosted Rust application
Requirements & limits
The repository is public, published as the tinycortex Rust package, and licensed under GPL-3.0. The documented core is self-hosted and available for Linux, macOS and Windows development environments.
- Markdown is the source of truth; SQLite rows, vectors, summary trees and the Git-backed ledger are derived indexes.
- The library provides retrieval signals and composition primitives rather than imposing one hidden global ranking rule.
- The simple reference backend is in memory; the full engine includes content storage, chunking, scoring, summary trees and retrieval primitives.
- Git snapshots and synchronization pipelines are exposed through optional Cargo features.
- The hosted TinyCortex platform is described separately from this open-source Rust core and is in closed alpha according to the repository description.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
