the Veil

the Veil is an open-source desktop application for software development with AI. It can assign work to specialist agents, coordinate their work on a shared project, and retain project memory across sessions.

Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it when a software task benefits from coordinated specialist agents, a persistent project context, or a desktop workflow that can use local models as well as external endpoints.

Who it is for

  • Developers building or maintaining software
  • Teams or individuals who want parallel AI agents for coding tasks
  • Users who want local inference or connections to Ollama and OpenAI-compatible endpoints

Documented uses

  • Delegate software tasks to specialist agents
  • Build and modify projects in a desktop coding workspace
  • Review generated files, diffs and test output
  • Carry project knowledge and preferences into later coding sessions
  • Use a built-in, local, Ollama or compatible hosted model
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

The project is open source and MIT licensed. Desktop releases are documented for Windows, macOS and Linux. Local inference does not require a provider account or API key; hosted providers have their own data handling and costs. The built-in model requires a separate download, and coding tools require Python on PATH, with some checks using Node.

  • Whether parallel specialist agents are useful for the task
  • Whether persistent project memory matters across sessions
  • Whether local inference, Ollama or an OpenAI-compatible endpoint best fits the workflow
  • Whether Python is available on PATH for the coding tools
  • Whether the project can be safely edited and its diffs and test output reviewed

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Try a first coding task and test project memory

Evaluate a small code change, review its result, and check whether the next conversation recalls the project context.

Before you start

  • An installed Veil desktop app
  • A selected model
  • A project that can be safely edited
  • Python on PATH for coding tools

Steps

  1. Select a model and open a project that can be safely edited.

  2. Give the agent one concrete task, such as finding a missing input-validation test, adding it, making the smallest required fix, and running the relevant tests.

  3. Review the diff and the actual test output.

  4. Start a new conversation on the same project and ask which test command was used and what changed last time.

Expected outcome

You receive a concrete code change and test result, then can assess whether the project memory recalls the earlier workflow.

Guide limitations

  • The documented workflow requires reviewing the diff and test output yourself.
  • Without Python on PATH, the agent can chat but coding tools cannot do much work.
  • The example task is a suggested evaluation workflow, not a guarantee of successful execution.
COMPARE OPTIONS

Compare options for Agent orchestration

These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
