Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you need a code-based starting point for T5 pretraining or sequence-to-sequence fine-tuning on a Google Cloud TPU VM and can manage the cloud resources and model storage.
Who it is for
- ML practitioners preparing to train or fine-tune Flax T5 models on Google Cloud TPUs.
- Developers who want a worked example of adapting Hugging Face Flax training examples to a TPU VM workflow.
Documented uses
- Set up a Google Cloud TPU VM and its JAX/Flax training environment.
- Prepare a tokenizer and model configuration from a Hugging Face Hub dataset.
- Pretrain T5 with span-masked language modeling and publish checkpoints and artifacts to the Hub.
- Fine-tune T5 for sequence-to-sequence tasks using the repository’s adapted workflow.
Requirements & limits
The GitHub repository is public and lists an Apache-2.0 license. The tutorial uses Google Cloud TPU resources and Hugging Face Hub credentials, which users need to arrange for their workflow.
- The instructions specify a TPUv3-8 VM and an Ubuntu 20.04 environment.
- The setup includes Python 3.8, JAX with TPU support, repository requirements, and Git LFS.
- The README describes Hugging Face Hub use for model files and checkpoints; credentials and Hub storage are part of the workflow.
- Dataset and checkpoint storage can exceed the VM’s stated roughly 100 GB disk space; the README discusses adding a disk and managing checkpoint frequency.
- The code is an adaptation of Hugging Face Flax pretraining and sequence-to-sequence fine-tuning examples, rather than a hosted training interface.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Prepare a Google Cloud TPU VM for Flax T5
Provision and configure the TPU VM environment described in the README, stopping before model training.
Before you start
- Google Cloud project and zone
- Google Cloud SDK with the gcloud client installed
- TPUv3-8 access and a TPU VM name
- A Hugging Face Hub account and project for the later model setup
Steps
Set the project, zone, and TPU VM name variables, then use the README’s gcloud command to create a TPUv3-8 VM.
Connect with the documented gcloud TPU VM SSH command.
On the Ubuntu 20.04 VM, create and activate a Python 3.8 virtual environment, install the documented JAX TPU package and requirements, and install Git LFS.
Expected outcome
A TPU VM with the tutorial’s Python, JAX TPU, project-dependency, and Git LFS setup in place.
Guide limitations
- The README warns that the VM’s roughly 100 GB of disk space may be insufficient for raw and processed data plus checkpoints; it describes adding and mounting a separate disk.
- Cloud access, TPU resources, storage limits, and Hugging Face Hub credentials must be arranged by the user.
- The guide documents setup steps, not a guarantee that they work unchanged in every environment.
