Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it when a team needs live, cross-application retrieval and cited answers while keeping source data in its existing systems.

Who it is for

  • Organizations building enterprise search across existing business applications.
  • Teams seeking a self-hosted RAG layer that queries live sources.
  • Developers extending connectors, mixers or federated search workflows.

Documented uses

  • Search across multiple connected applications from one interface.
  • Retrieve live organizational information without creating a second source-data copy.
  • Generate answers with clickable citations using a configured OpenAI key.
  • Rank, mix and post-process federated results through the available processing architecture.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

The repository documents self-hosting with Docker and identifies the project as open source under Apache 2.0. Real-time RAG uses the user's own OpenAI key.

  • Source data is queried in place rather than moved into a required vector database or ETL copy.
  • Community ranking uses cosine vector similarity with spaCy and NLTK, while the repository lists more advanced ranking capabilities under Enterprise.
  • The Docker quick-start installation is non-persistent across shutdowns.
  • The documented Community interface includes more than 100 connectors and Microsoft 365 OAuth2 integration.
  • Results can be stored in SQLite or Postgres for post-processing and analytics.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Start SWIRL Community with Docker

Launch the local Galaxy interface and run a first search using the documented default sources.

Before you start

  • Docker must be installed and running.
  • An OpenAI API key is needed for real-time RAG with the user's own OpenAI account.

Steps

  1. Download the Compose file from the SWIRL Community repository.

  2. Optionally set MSAL_CB_PORT, MSAL_HOST and OPENAI_API_KEY for real-time RAG.

  3. Run docker-compose pull && docker-compose up.

  4. Open http://localhost:8000/galaxy, log in with the documented admin credentials and run a search.

Expected outcome

A local SWIRL Galaxy interface is available for searching Arxiv, European PMC and Google News; configured OpenAI access enables the documented real-time RAG option.

Guide limitations

  • The Docker version does not retain data or configuration after shutdown.
  • The guide documents the initial setup, not a persistent production deployment.
