Supply Chain Blockchain

Supply Chain Blockchain is a web-based Ethereum dApp for recording and viewing product journeys through role-based supply-chain stages, described for pharmaceutical products. Its Next.js client uses Web3.js to interact with Solidity smart contracts.

Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it to examine or develop a local Ethereum workflow for recording product stages and viewing their histories, especially the pharmaceutical example described in the repository.

Who it is for

  • Developers exploring an Ethereum supply-chain dApp implementation.
  • Teams assessing a role-based product-provenance workflow for a pharmaceutical supply chain.

Documented uses

  • Register supplier, manufacturer, distributor and retailer participants.
  • Create product orders with an ID, name and description.
  • Record stage actions as products move through the supply chain.
  • Look up a product ID to review its recorded journey and generate a QR code for verification.

Requirements & limits

The README provides local installation and setup instructions and lists the repository under an MIT license. It describes a developer setup using Ganache and MetaMask.

  • The documented domain is pharmaceutical supply chains, rather than a general-purpose logistics service.
  • The contract owner registers participants and creates orders; supply-chain roles advance products through stages.
  • Local setup depends on coordinating the Ganache, Hardhat and MetaMask RPC URL and chain ID.
  • The repository presents a software traceability workflow; a recorded history alone does not establish the authenticity of physical goods.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Prepare the local Ganache network and MetaMask

Configure the local network and wallet settings that the project README says should match before using the app.

Before you start

  • Node.js 18 or higher
  • Git
  • Ganache
  • MetaMask
  • The project repository and installed backend and client dependencies

Steps

  1. Create or open a Ganache workspace and set its host to 127.0.0.1 and port to 7545.

  2. Set the chain ID to 1337, matching the documented Hardhat network configuration and client deployment keys.

  3. In MetaMask, add a network using the same RPC URL and chain ID, then select it.

  4. For owner-only actions, import Ganache's first account into MetaMask and select it; the README identifies this as the contract owner account in its deployment instructions.

Expected outcome

Ganache, Hardhat's documented local network settings and MetaMask are configured to use the same RPC URL and chain ID.

Guide limitations

  • This guide covers local network and wallet setup only; it does not establish that a deployment or application workflow has been run successfully.
  • The README notes that owner-only actions require the active MetaMask account to match the deployer account.
