Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it when a Node.js or browser application needs reusable Steem API and transaction components rather than a ready-made end-user app.

Who it is for

  • JavaScript or TypeScript developers building Steem-connected applications.
  • Teams creating account-data viewers, posting or voting tools, wallet interfaces, or encrypted-memo features.

Documented uses

  • Request account and blockchain data through a configured Steem API node.
  • Prepare, sign, and broadcast operations such as votes from an application.
  • Use key-management and transaction utilities in a wallet interface.
  • Create or read encrypted Steem memos.

Requirements & limits

The project is published as an open-source library under the MIT license in its public repository.

  • Node.js projects require version 20.19.0 or later; browser projects require Web Crypto API support.
  • Applications must configure a Steem node endpoint; the README example also sets the STM address prefix.
  • The library documents distinct RPC routing for legacy read APIs and chain or validation APIs.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Install the library and query a Steem account

Set up the package in a Node.js project, configure a Steem node, and request account information.

Before you start

  • Node.js 20.19.0 or later
  • A Steem API node endpoint

Steps

  1. Install the package with npm, pnpm, or yarn.

  2. Import steem from @steemit/steem-js.

  3. Configure the node endpoint and address prefix.

  4. Call steem.api.getAccountsAsync with an account name.

Expected outcome

The API call returns account information for the requested name.

Guide limitations

  • The example requires an application environment and a configured node endpoint; it is not a standalone account viewer.
