Practical overview
When it fits
Use Sparrow when you want a desktop Bitcoin wallet that supports most hardware wallets, or when you need to configure the application for a specific listed Bitcoin network.
Who it is for
- Bitcoin users who want a desktop wallet with hardware-wallet support.
- Users working with PSBT-based Bitcoin transaction signing.
- Developers who want to build the wallet from its public Java repository.
Documented uses
- Manage Bitcoin wallets in a desktop application.
- Work with a Bitcoin transaction workflow based on PSBT.
- Configure Sparrow for mainnet, testnet, testnet4, regtest or signet.
Requirements & limits
- Sparrow is a desktop application, not a browser-based wallet.
- The repository documents support for most hardware wallets but does not name specific devices in the provided material.
- Testnet use with an Electrum server requires that server to be configured for the same test network.
- The public repository identifies Java as the primary language and Apache-2.0 as the license.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Build Sparrow from its source repository
Prepare the project and build Sparrow binaries from source.
Before you start
- Java 25 or higher.
- Git access to the public Sparrow repository.
- Platform-specific packaging tools may be needed; the repository lists rpm, fakeroot and binutils for Debian or Ubuntu, and WiX for a Windows installer.
Steps
Clone the repository recursively using SSH or HTTPS.
Run
./gradlew jpackagefrom the project directory. On Linux distributions without deb or rpm packaging tools, use
./gradlew jpackage -PskipInstallers=trueto skip installer packaging.
Expected outcome
The documented build process packages Sparrow binaries from source; installer packaging can be skipped on Linux distributions without the listed packaging tools.
Guide limitations
- Java 25 or higher is required.
- The repository notes that additional packages may be required depending on the platform.
- Building a Windows installer requires WiX.
