Solsim

Solsim is a Python simulator for modeling dynamical systems, including DeFi protocols, DAO governance and cryptocurrencies built on Solana. Developers define an initial state and step-by-step behavior, select variables to track, and receive simulation results in a pandas DataFrame. It also supports models that do not use Solana.

Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Solsim when you can express a system as an initial state and a sequence of state updates, and want to record selected variables over time. For Solana-connected models, it provides documented Anchor and Solana client integration; for abstract models, its BaseSystem workflow works without Solana.

Who it is for

  • Developers modeling Solana-based protocols or other blockchain systems.
  • Researchers and builders exploring how defined system assumptions shape outcomes over time.

Documented uses

  • Model DeFi protocol dynamics on Solana.
  • Explore DAO governance or cryptocurrency behavior under chosen assumptions.
  • Track selected state variables and collect results across simulation steps.
  • Compare model runs using structured tabular output.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

The project is publicly available on GitHub under the MIT license. The README documents installation with pip.

  • You define the model behavior yourself through initial_step and step methods.
  • A watchlist determines which variables appear in the results.
  • Solana-specific modeling uses Anchor-oriented program workspaces and Solana RPC clients.
  • Solsim also supports non-Solana models through BaseSystem.
  • The documented output is a pandas DataFrame, with a Streamlit results explorer available for visualization.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Set up a Solana system model

Prepare a model class that Solsim can use to simulate a Solana program.

Before you start

  • Python
  • A Solana program; the project recommends using Anchor
  • Anchor installed

Steps

  1. Write a system class that inherits from BaseSolanaSystem.

  2. Initialize the parent with the path to the program workspace.

  3. Implement asynchronous initial_step and step methods that return state dictionaries.

  4. Choose a watchlist, create a Simulation with the system, and call run.

Expected outcome

Solsim records the watched variables across simulation steps and returns the results as a pandas DataFrame.

Guide limitations

  • The model and Solana program must be implemented by the user.
  • This guide covers the documented model setup and run call, not deployment of a Solana program.

Install the Solsim Python library

Install Solsim as a Python library.

Before you start

  • Python package installation environment
  • Anchor installed, as specified by the project README

Steps

  1. Install Anchor.

  2. Run the command below.

    Documented command
    pip install solsim

Expected outcome

The README's documented library installation command has been completed.

Guide limitations

  • This is an installation recipe; it does not configure a model or run a simulation.
