Practical overview
When it fits
Use it while developing in Visual Studio Code when you want to insert, browse, or maintain reusable Solana code and terminal snippets without retyping them.
Who it is for
- Developers writing Solana programs in Visual Studio Code.
- Rust developers who want Rust Analyzer snippets with automatic imports when inserted from a Rust file.
- Developers who use shell scripts or VS Code’s integrated terminal alongside Solana work.
Documented uses
- Insert a Solana program structure or other code fragment into an editor file.
- Add a Rust Analyzer snippet and its required imports from within a Rust function or method.
- Insert or run a shell-command snippet through the VS Code sidebar.
- Edit, remove, import, export, or synchronize snippets.
Requirements & limits
- Rust Analyzer snippets currently cover Native examples; automatic imports are added when these snippets are called from a Rust file, not when selected from the sidebar.
- Terminal snippets run directly in the VS Code integrated terminal.
- The project says snippets are tested in a real Solana program or shell scripts.
- Resetting to the default snippets deletes custom entries and restores the defaults.
- The public repository lists an MIT license.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Insert a Solana snippet into a file or terminal
Use the VS Code extension to find and insert a code snippet, or run a terminal snippet from the sidebar.
Before you start
- Visual Studio Code with the Solana Snippets extension available.
- A Rust file to browse Rust Analyzer snippets if using that snippet type.
Steps
In any file, type
>to display VS Code snippets; in a Rust file, type__inside a function or method to display Rust Analyzer snippets.Choose a snippet from the suggestions, or open the Solana-logo sidebar and select one.
For a snippet with inputs, use Tab to move between placeholders; repeated inputs need to be filled only once.
From the sidebar, selecting a code snippet inserts it into the current file; selecting a terminal snippet executes it in the integrated terminal.
Expected outcome
The selected code snippet is inserted into the file, or the selected terminal snippet is run in VS Code's integrated terminal.
Guide limitations
- Rust Analyzer snippets add imports automatically when invoked from the file, but not when selected from the sidebar.
- The documented automatic-import behavior for Rust Analyzer snippets is currently limited to Native snippets.
Edit a saved snippet
Customize an existing snippet through the extension's sidebar or command palette.
Before you start
- Visual Studio Code with the Solana Snippets extension available.
- An existing snippet to edit.
Steps
Open the Solana-logo sidebar and left-click the snippet, or run the
Solana Snippets: Edit Snippetcommand.Edit the snippet in the new VS Code window that opens.
Save your changes to update the snippet in the extension.
Expected outcome
The saved snippet is updated with the changes.
Guide limitations
- The documented edit flow opens the snippet in a new VS Code window.
