Practical overview
When it fits
Use Skweak when manual annotation is costly or task-specific labeled data is scarce, and you can define labeling signals and work with spaCy documents.
Who it is for
- NLP developers preparing task-specific training data
- Teams working with resource-poor languages or specialized text domains
- spaCy users who want to combine multiple weak labeling sources
Documented uses
- Create labeling functions based on heuristics, gazetteers, machine-learning models or crowd annotations.
- Apply multiple labeling functions to unannotated text represented as spaCy Doc objects.
- Aggregate conflicting annotations while estimating labeling functions’ relative accuracy.
- Prepare labeled corpora for training a model in a chosen framework.
Requirements & limits
The repository identifies Skweak as open source under the MIT license.
- The workflow requires raw text to be converted into spaCy Doc objects.
- The project lists Python 3.6 or later and dependencies on spaCy, hmmlearn, pandas and numpy.
- The project is no longer actively maintained.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install Skweak and prepare a spaCy document
Install the core library and prepare raw text as a spaCy Doc, the input format used by the documented weak-supervision workflow.
Before you start
- Python 3.6 or later
- spaCy 3.0 or later
- hmmlearn 0.3 or later
- pandas 0.23 or later
- numpy 1.18 or later
Steps
Install the core library with the command below.
pip install skweakUse spaCy to convert raw text into a
Docobject.
Expected outcome
The core library is installed and text is represented in the spaCy format required for applying labeling functions.
Guide limitations
- This covers installation and input preparation, not applying or aggregating labeling functions.
- The installation includes the core library, not the additional examples.
- The project is no longer actively maintained.
