Rutis

Rutis is a Rust-core plugin runtime that lets agents and long-running programs create, replace and hot-reload plugins written in TypeScript, Python and Go. Plugins declare services they need and provide, and Rutis manages their lifecycle across processes and machines.

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Rutis when a running agent or application needs to add, replace or develop plugins without restarting the entire host, particularly when plugins span TypeScript, Python, Go or separate processes and machines.

Who it is for

  • Developers building agents that need to add or replace integrations while running.
  • Teams extending long-lived applications with reloadable plugins.
  • Builders coordinating TypeScript, Python and Go components through named services.

Documented uses

  • Create a plugin project for a supported language using the host tooling.
  • Inspect which services each plugin needs and provides, including identifying an unprovided dependency.
  • Reload a plugin during development when its files change.
  • Replace a service provider and restart the plugins that depend on it.
  • Embed the runtime in a Rust application.

Requirements & limits

The repository is public and lists the MIT license. The README documents host tooling for Node, Bun, Python and Go, plus Rust embedding.

  • The runtime core is written in Rust, while documented plugin languages include TypeScript, Python and Go.
  • The host workflow documents Node, Bun, Python and Go project scaffolding.
  • Plugins declare required and provided services; the host can check these declarations.
  • The runtime describes gated startup, cleanup exactly once, rollback on failed loads and dependency-specific restarts on provider replacement.
  • Cross-process and cross-machine plugin operation is part of the stated design.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Scaffold and inspect a Node plugin project

Create a Node-language Rutis plugin project, install its dependencies, start the development host and inspect declared plugin services.

Before you start

  • Node.js package tooling capable of running npx
  • A terminal

Steps

  1. Run the command below.

    Documented command
npx @arcships/rutis-host new weather --lang node
  2. Enter the generated project directory with cd weather and install dependencies using the command below.

    Documented command
    npm install
  3. Run the command below to run the plugin and reload it when its files change.

    Documented command
    npx rutis-host dev
  4. Run the command below to list plugin dependencies and provided services and identify a service with no provider.

    Documented command
    npx rutis-host check

Expected outcome

A scaffolded Node plugin project with documented development reload and dependency inspection commands.

Guide limitations

  • These steps cover the documented Node host workflow; they do not describe deployment.

Add Rutis to a Rust application

Add the Rutis and Tokio dependencies as the documented setup stage for embedding the runtime in a Rust application.

Before you start

  • A Rust project using Cargo

Steps

  1. Run the command below.

    Documented command
    cargo add rutis
  2. Run the command below.

    Documented command
    cargo add tokio --features full

Expected outcome

The Rust project declares Rutis and Tokio dependencies; the repository points to a separate guide for hosting TypeScript, Python and Go plugins in a Rust application.

Guide limitations

  • The commands document dependency setup, not a complete host implementation or execution workflow.
